Caring About Value
Caring About Value: A grounded theory of the quest for higher value care in hospitals The global pursuit of ‘value’ in hospitals continues amid rising healthcare costs. Traditionally, value in this context has focused on costs and benefits. Extending constructivist grounded theory using a therapeutic landscape lens, we explore value in hospitals not only as places of caring but also as workplaces where professional hierarchies and specialisation …
Becoming Experts in Their Own Treatment
Children who experience a severe burn injury not only require acute medical care but may also need ongoing rehabilitation. To mitigate the potential long-term consequences of scarring and the impact of scarring on their everyday lives, children may be expected to use a variety of time-consuming and multi-component non-invasive scar treatments (such as pressure garments and silicone gels). These treatments may pose unique challenges for children a…
Fire and Smoke
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and adolescents are disproportionately affected by burn injuries, yet often omitted from burns literature or inadequately portrayed under Western frameworks. We highlight and address the urgent need for knowledge about pediatric burns among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be produced from within Indigenous research methodologies and in response to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander…
Preventive intervention for trauma reactions in young injured children
BACKGROUND: Young children are at particular risk for injury. Ten per cent to twenty-five per cent develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, no empirically supported preventive interventions exist. Therefore, this study evaluated the efficacy of a standardised targeted preventive intervention for PTSD in young injured children. METHODS: Injured children (1-6 years) were enrolled in a multi-site parallel-group superiority prospective …
Development, Implementation and Evaluation of an Educational Intervention to Prevent Low Speed Vehicle Run-Over Events
There is a growing body of literature regarding low speed vehicle runover (LSVRO) events among children. To date, no literature exists on evaluation of interventions to address this serious childhood injury. Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour regarding LSVROs were assessed via survey at a shopping centre (pre-intervention), then five months later (post-intervention), to investigate the effect of a population level educational intervention in Que…
Drowning in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and adolescents in Queensland (Australia)
For every fatal drowning among Indigenous children in Queensland aged 0-19 years there are nine non-fatal events. This previously unreported survival ratio of 9:1 indicates the non-fatal injury burden in Indigenous children aged 0-19 years. Although higher Indigenous drowning rates prevailed, no significant changes over time are concerning. Equally the apparent over-representation of Indigenous adolescent females should be weighed against the abs…
Incidence of paediatric fatal and non-fatal low speed vehicle run over events in Queensland, Australia
This is the most comprehensive, population-based epidemiological study on fatal and non-fatal LSVRO events to date. Results from this study indicate that LSVROs incur a substantial burden. Further research is required on the characteristics and risk factors associated with these events, in order to adequately inform injury prevention. Strategies are urgently required in order to prevent these events, especially among young children aged 0-4 years
