A Factor Analysis of the Rucker-Gable Educational Programming Scale
The Rucker-Gable Educational Programming Scale (RGEPS) was designed to measure a respondent's attitude toward and knowledge of appropriate program placement for handicapped students. In the present study, 205 regular classroom teachers were administered the RGEPS and their responses were examined via a series of factor analyses. Results indicated that the instrument appears to measure four dimensions. These four dimensions accounted for only 42 p…
An Approximate Hotelling's T2 Test for Matched Group Designs with SPSS
This paper describes the procedures that may be used to compute Hotelling's T 2 for matched group designs using the RELIABILITY routine of SPSS. Modifications of a normal SPSS job necessary for the test are described. An example data set is used to illustrate the procedure
Effects of Item Characteristics on Psychometric Properties of Forced Choice Scales
Two studies examined the effects of indeterminate frequency modifiers, item length, and statement direction on response to forced choice scale items. A pilot study established relative intensities of nine adverbial modifiers. Study 1 ( N = 320) showed no effect on item variances due to the treatments. Differences were found between mean responses of short and long items as well as between positively and negatively stated items. Study 2 ( N = 110)…
Physical Dimensions of Counseling
Fifteen graduate students in the helping professions registered in a course that teaches helpers to use physical fitness as a counseling medium. The enrolled graduate students were matched with controls in four relevant areas, and both groups were pretested on 7 physiological and 11 psychological variables. The experimental students were given a 10-week treatment of physical fitness training, counseling in health habits, a life-style of well-bein…
Learners' Characteristics and Performance Effects in Self-Paced Instruction
Two groups of 18 college students were given self-paced or traditional instruction toward the same objectives. Data showed low external locus of control, low endurance and high autonomy (Personality Research Form) predicted comprehension of self-paced students. Ratings of teachers by self-paced students were more positive
