  • Why Religions Matter

    Open Access•John Bowker•BOOK•Why Religions Matter•2015

What are religions? Why is it important to understand them? One answer is that religions and religious believers are extremely bad news: they are deeply involved in conflicts around the globe; they harm people of whom they disapprove; and they often seem irrational. Another answer claims that they are in fact extremely good news: religious beliefs and practices are universal and so fundamental in human nature that they have led us to great discov…

  • God: A Very Short Introduction

    John Bowker•BOOK•God•2014

Who or what is God? How can we know God? Many people believe in God; not just throughout history but also in the present day. But who or what is it they believe in? Many different and sometimes conflicting answers have been suggested to this question. God: A Very Short Introduction explores some of the answers provided by philosophers, poets, and theologians, and considers why some people believe in God and others do not. It considers how each ma…

    Open Access•John Bowker•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1981

This paper was originally given to a meeting of the Institute of Religion and Theology in London. It was in response to a specific request to consider how far it is desirable, or even necessary, for a student or a teacher of a religious tradition to know at least the main language(s) of the tradition in question. To what extent, to put it slightly differently, is it possible to gain knowledge of, and insight into, religion and religions through t…

  • The Problem of Suffering in the Qur'an

    Open Access•John Bowker•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1969

In his recent book, Evil and the God of Love , 1 Dr John Hick examined various Christian responses to the problem of evil. He traced two related, but in important respects different, paths of thought, which correspond to the two main ways in which the genesis or origin of evil have been understood: either as a capacity for goodness which has not yet been realised (with life, therefore, as a ‘vale of soul-making’), or as an original defect which h…

  • The Targums and Rabbinic Literature: An Introduction to Jewish Interpretations of Scripture

Open Access•John Bowker, John Westerdale Bowker•BOOK•Targums and Rabbinic Literature•1969

The Targums are interpretative translations of the Hebrew text of the Bible which originated in Synagogue teaching, where an interpretation of the Hebrew text had to be given orally for the benefit of non-Hebrew speaking congregations. Over the centuries, a loose 'Targum Tradition' began to form and the written Aramaic Targums can best be understood as crystallisations of the Targum tradition at different points of time. In the first part of this…
