The ‘Road to Nowhere’: The Evidence for Travelling Criminals
A group of offenders aged 16 to 43 years from Sheffield were interviewed. Half of the sample of offenders had been convicted of burglary offences, with the remaining half being convicted of TWOC, but as Table 9.1 shows, many had committed other offences too. Indeed, Over 50 per cent of ‘burglars’ had committed a TWOC and over 50 per cent of ‘TWOCers’ had committed a burglary. ‘Burglars were much more likely to have shoplifted or committed drug of…
Disadvantage, disorder and diversity
Professor Sampson is our foremost contemporary researcher of urban disorder and crime and this recent lecture (Sampson 2009) provides an elegant summary of his current thinking. It also represents a new attempt to empirically explain how the interplay between structure and perception drive action and hence future structure. In this country, similar thinking has been attempted – most notably at Cambridge by Tony Bottoms and Per-Olof Wikström. Howe…

A Comparative Evaluation of Approaches to Urban Crime Pattern Analysis
The increased availability of digital data and the increased scrutiny of public expenditure are opening new opportunities for detailed spatial analysis of social behaviour and policy initiatives to target resources where they are most needed. Two such policy areas in which the use of GIS combined with spatial analysis tools has made significant progress are health and police services, which are at the top of the political agenda due to increasing…
Dangerous Futures: Social Exclusion and Youth Work in Late Modernity
The paper contrasts the role and structure of youth work in modern and late modern societies. Modern societies linked citizenship to inclusion in production and youth work helped the transition of young people from childhood to inclusion into the labour market and citizenship. When postwar full employment eased these transition processes then youth work concentrated on leisure provision and dealing with the small numbers of excluded young people.…
Housing Tenure and Residential Community Crime Careers in Britain
The notion of a "criminal career," though generally used in reference to individuals, can be applied also to residential communities. The key to understanding community criminal careers in Britain lies within the operation of the housing market. The urban geography of most large British cities has resulted from historical developments unique to housing tenure in Britain. The tenure picture is unlike that portrayed in the Chicago model of concentr…
The Post-Corporatist State
This paper is an attempt to sketch out some ideas concerning changes which have been taking place in the engine of the British state in the very recent past and in particular in the post-1979 period. In earlier work1 we have argued that the British state is neither a rechstaat, nor does it conform to the idealism of a democratically responsible House of Commons operating on the basis of some clouded notion of mandate and reinforced by an independ…

In 1968 Renato Treves and J.F. Glastra van Loon edited Norms and Actions, a book of essays by indigenous scholars describing "law and society" research in their countries. No account of work in Britain was included, probably because there was so little activity in the field at that time. Yet only eight years later remarkable changes seem to have occurred. Courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level have proliferated; the number of empirical r…
