  • The Application of Discriminant Function Analysis to Correlated Samples

    Open Access•G Frank Lawlis, Arthur B Sweney•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1975

A method of applying the discriminant function to correlated samples was discussed for the researcher interested in utilizing multivariate statistics to pre-post data. By finding the linear combination that maximizes differences in the groups, the t-statistic can be computed for correlated samples

  • Application of an Information Model to Schizophrenia

    Open Access•Richard V Alumbaugh, Arthur B Sweney•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1973

The frequently reported inability of schizophrenics to disregard irrelevancy was investigated within the framework of information theory. Quantitative and qualitative noise levels were varied with levels of relevant information. Chronic schizophrenics ( N = 30) were compared with tubercular controls and community volunteers ( Ns = 30) on a task consisting of the tachistoscopic presentation of dots in the presence of noise. The results substantiat…

  • A Comparison of Methods for Constructing Predictive Instruments

    Open Access•Richard V Alumbaugh, Harry G Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1969

  • Relations Between Conscious And Unconscious Manifestations Of Motivation In Children

    Arthur B Sweney, Desmond S Cartwright•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1966

Interest strength in 36 attitudes was measured on 89 public school students by means of four indirect behavioral tests. Standard scores on Word Association and Information were combined to give the Integrated (conscious) scores, and those on Selective Memory and Autism were combined to give the Unintegrated (unconscious) scores. Eighteen hypothesized drive factors and four device factors were extracted. The centroid was partitioned, and the Unint…

  • A Factorial Resolution of Psychometric Measures of Anxiety

    Open Access•Mary T Spence, Arthur B Sweney•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1966

The measurement of anxiety by means of psychometric instruments has tended to yield reliable and replicable measures which are disappointingly unrelated to clinical problems. Taylor (1953) recognized that her MAS scale assessed manifest anxiety. Cattell (1956) and his associates have consistently found a second-order anxiety factor composed of five scales from the 16 PF. Welsh (1956) factored the scored items on the MMPI and found that the larges…

  • What Can Personality and Motivation Source Trait Measurements Add to the Prediction of School Achievement

    Open Access•Raymond B Cattell, A P Sealy et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1966•Cited by: 1

Intelligence (fluid-culture fair, and crystallized-traditional tests), fourteen primary personality factors (on the HSPQ), and fifteen dynamic structure factors (on the School Motivation Analysis Test), were measured on five samples of seventh and eighth grade children (Total N = 563) involving (with the achievement test), eight hours of testing. Each of the three modalities of predictor accounted for about a third of the criterion variance, and s…

  • Components in Motivation Strength in Children Compared with Those in Adults

Raymond B Cattell, John A Radcliffe et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1964

  • Components measurable in manifestations of mental conflict

    Raymond B Cattell, Arthur B Sweney•ARTICLE•Journal of Abnormal & Social…•1964•Cited by: 1
