New Weapons, New Tactics 1300–1500
The new edition of The Cambridge History of Warfare, written and updated by a team of eight distinguished military historians, examines how war was waged by Western powers across a sweeping timeframe beginning with classical Greece and Rome, moving through the Middle Ages and the early modern period, down to the wars of the twenty-first century in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. The book stresses five essential aspects of the Western way of war: a …

The De Re Militari of Vegetius
Vegetius' late Roman text became a well-known and highly respected 'classic' in the Middle Ages, transformed by its readers into the authority on the waging of war. Christopher Allmand analyses the medieval afterlife of the De Re Militari, tracing the growing interest in the text from the Carolingian world to the late Middle Ages, suggesting how the written word may have influenced the development of military practice in that period. While emphas…
Vegetius’ De re militari
In recent years, the De Re Militari of the Roman writer Vegetius, regarded in the Middle Ages as the authority on war, has increasingly drawn the attention of historians. Study of an important source, the marginalia on the 220 or so surviving medieval manuscripts reflecting the reactions of readers to particular passages in the text, can tell us much as to how it was read and responded to by readers in the Middle Ages, not least by Petrarch, whos…

La Normandie et l'Angleterre au Moyen Age
IN 1992 there took place at Reading a conference the proceedings of which, edited by David Bates and Anne Curry, were published as England and Normandy in the Middle Ages (1994) (rev. ante, cxii (1997), 437–8). These consisted of 21 papers, three by French scholars playing away, all published in English. Very broadly, the subjects covered included aspects of the history of Normandy, the effects of the conquest in England, a solid core of papers o…

The New Cambridge Medieval History
This volume covers the last century (interpreted broadly) of the traditional western Middle Ages. Often seen as a time of doubt, decline and division, the period is shown here as a period of considerable innovation and development, much of which resulted from a conscious attempt by contemporaries to meet the growing demands of society and to find practical solutions to the social, religious and political problems which beset it. The volume consis…

The Aftermath of War in Fifteenth‐century France
Alan Kirketon
The search for royal councillors was one of the major difficulties which Henry V had to face once he had achieved the conquest of Normandy. Many local royal officials, having taken the oath of loyalty to the king, were confirmed in their posts; others were brought over from England—a system which proved satisfactory at first. But the finding of personnel for the higher offices presented Henry with a serious problem. Since he was unwilling to trus…

Some Effects of the Last Phase of the Hundred Years War upon the Maintenance of Clergy
None will be surprised that there were English clergy in France and Normandy during the period of the Lancastrian occupation in the fifteenth century. What is perhaps surprising is that there were so few of them. Writing on Henry V, Professor Waugh noted that only about twenty of their names were to be found in the Norman Rolls for the last two years of the reign. While it is not always possible to agree with Waugh over the names of clergy whom h…

The Hundred Years War
This is a comparative study of how the societies of late-medieval England and France reacted to the long period of conflict between them commonly known as the Hundred Years War. Beginning with an analysis of contemporary views regarding the war. Two chapters follow which describe the military aim of the protagonists, military and naval organisation, recruitment, and the raising of taxes. The remainder of the book describes and analyses some of th…
