  • Does the law matter for the poor? Evaluating the response to a child begging regulation

    Open Access•Stef Adriaenssen, Teodora-Maria Soares•ARTICLE•Sociology•2026

Some scholars argue that poverty reduces responsiveness to regulatory incentives, reducing the law’s deterrent effects. Conversely, some expect the poor to assess risks better and to be more risk-averse. In the former case, destitute people will be less likely to comply with criminal regulations. We test this prediction with the help of a natural experiment: the proclamation of a Brussels city council bylaw that forbids the presence of children a…

A strand of the social policy literature investigates who the general public deems deserving of benefits or other types of assistance from public money. This is based on a deservingness heuristic – the judgmental shortcuts people use to make choices. We apply this to direct solidarity towards people who beg through a discrete choice experiment (DCE), the first study to apply the DCE approach to assess direct solidarity choices towards people in e…

  • Housing quality and homelessness among people who beg

    Open Access•Teodora-Maria Soares, Stef Adriaenssen et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2024•References: 3

The poverty literature often overlooks the relationship between housing insecurity and income-generating activities. The often informal sources of income among the homeless strongly connect to other aspects of their lives. Nonetheless, these groups of severely deprived people are often missing from large-scale studies and official statistics. Using an original and comprehensive survey, we document the complex interaction between living conditions…

Open Access•Stef Adriaenssen, Tobias Theys et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Policy•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 39

Labour markets for personal and household services (PHS) are rife with informal employment. Some policies aim to combat informality in PHS with subsidized service vouchers, but their effects are poorly documented. This contribution evaluates the Belgian service vouchers (1) documenting their formalization effectiveness, and (2) accounting for the persistence of informal employment. To this end, we exploit several types of data and methods.A first…

  • Compensating wage differentials in formal and informal jobs

Open Access•Dieter Verhaest, Stef Adriaenssen et al.•ARTICLE•Kyklos•2022

We link the dearth of empirical support for the theory of compensating wage differentials (CWD) to minimum wages and other labour market regulations. As these labour market regulations matter less for informal jobs, we hypothesise that CWD for adverse working conditions are more likely to be observed in these jobs relative to formal jobs. This is tested based on teenage employment data. The results are in line with our hypothesis. While informal …

  • The unequal effects of austerity measures between income-groups on the access to healthcare

Open Access•Lore Torfs, Stef Adriaenssen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2021

Background The Great Recession, starting in 2008, was characterized by an overall reduction in living standards. This pushed several governments across Europe to restrict expenditures, also in the area of healthcare. These austerity measures are known to have affected access to healthcare, probably unevenly among social groups. This study examines the unequal effects of retrenchment in healthcare expenditures on access to medical care for differe…

  • Sexual Practices

    Open Access•Stef Adriaenssen, Stef Adriaenssens•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2020•References: 3

Sexual practices are those actions people define as sexual, and their relationship to the architecture of society. These practices vary widely between and within societies, and change significantly through time. This variation is due, among other reasons, to different definitions and prescriptions of what is normal sexuality and what not. This is illustrated by the fact that sexual‐romantic kissing is not universal. Nevertheless, the gap between …

  • Spatial mismatch, education and language skills in the Brussels metropolis

Open Access•Tobias Theys, Nick Deschacht et al.•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2019

Spatial mismatch, where job seekers do not live where jobs can be found, can be an important barrier on the labour market, especially for vulnerable groups. In this study we look at the role that spatial mismatch plays in the Brussels metropolis. Using an improved benchmark, the distance-weighted spatial mismatch index, that also considers location-driven mismatch, we compare the spatial mismatch between the high- and low-skilled labour market an…

  • The evolution of inter-regional spatial mismatch in the USA

    Open Access•Tobias Theys, Nick Deschacht et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 38

The literature on spatial mismatch often focuses on a mismatch within cities or local labour markets. This paper looks at the spatial mismatch between local labour markets. Using US data, we study the evolution of inter-regional mismatch between 1980 and 2010 and how this evolution varies across skill levels. Since we expect the spatial structure of supply and demand in the labour market to play a central role at this geographical level, we devel…

  • Quality of Work in Prostitution and Sex Work. Introduction to the Special Section

Open Access•Stef Adriaenssen, Giulia Garofalo Geymonat et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 31

Increasingly, prostitution and other activities in the sex industries have been conceptualised as forms of labour, or at least as income-generating activities. As labour, these activities are exposed to particular risks with respect to health, working conditions, exploitation and stigmatisation. However, research on the actual conditions and circumstances existing in these markets, remains limited. The present article introduces some of the main …

  • Can informal economic activities be explained by social and institutional factors? A comparative analysis

    Stef Adriaenssen, Jef Hendrickx•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 62

Empirical literature on informal activities often builds on macro-economic country estimates, which impedes testing behavioural hypotheses. The European Social Survey (ESS), documenting self-reported tax evasion in 26 countries, allows us to test individual and institutional factors simultaneously. We model the effect of institutional and social capital factors affecting informal transactions. We predict that informality is fostered by social rel…

Unsafe sexual practices are persistent in prostitution interactions: one in four contacts can be called unsafe. The determinants of this are still matter for debate. We account for the roles played by clients' preferences and the hypothetical price premium of unsafe sexual practices with the help of a large dataset of clients' self-reported commercial sexual transactions in Belgium and The Netherlands. Almost 25,000 reports were collected, repres…

    Open Access•Stef Adriaenssen, Stef Adriaenssens et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2011•Cited by: 13•References: 34

This article develops and applies a method to estimate the revenues of beggars in Brussels. This is relevant for three reasons. First, in the literature on the informal economy, we lack reliable empirical knowledge of informal street-level activities like begging, substantiating the expectation that beggars’ income will be low. Secondly, popular representation of beggars often depicts them as criminal and wealthy. Finally, recent legislation buil…
