What influences the social acceptance of floating urban developments? Insights from a floating neighborhood in Amsterdam
There is increasing interest in floating urban developments as an innovative approach to urbanization pressures and climate change. Although smaller-scale floating housing projects already exist in the Netherlands and globally, developing and upscaling floating neighborhoods involves various complex governance challenges. Particularly the social and political acceptance of living on water remains a central, yet underexplored issue. Existing float…

The article builds on contributions from geography and science and technology studies which show that environmental knowledges emerge through heterogeneous social and biophysical interactions, with political consequences. Re…
De-centering the urban waterscape via patterns, relations and traces of drinking water quality in Kaolack, Senegal
Scholars studying urban water governance have used the concept of the waterscape to describe how unequal urban environments are constructed in ways that are deeply connected to power, knowledge, materiality, and social relations. Yet in many cases, these works have tended to prioritise access to water and neglect the role of water quality in co-producing urban waterscapes. Therefore in this article I show, using grounded ethnographic description …
Critically assembling water quality ethics beyond thresholds, hierarchies and best practices
The emerging field of water ethics analyses and explores the moral implications of particular human-water relations and practices. This article focuses on ethical aspects of planning, management and governance of water quality, in what I refer to as water quality ethics. In particular, I draw attention to the potential for incorporating the ethical perspectives of philosophers Giles Deleuze and Félix Guattari into water quality planning, manageme…
