  • Nina Hallowell, 4th november 1957 – 28th June 2023

    Open Access•Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2024

Nina Hallowell was a medical sociologist, Professor of Social and Ethical Aspects of Genomics at the University of Oxford, and an active member of the editorial board of Health, Risk & Society. In this article I reflect on her contribution to the journal and to the interdisciplinary study of risk especially through her research on the risk of new genetic technologies, both its management and impact on those at-risk

  • Plus ça change? The Covid-19 pandemic as continuity and change as reflected through risk theory

    Open Access•Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2021

On 30 December 2019, Dr Marjorie Pollack, deputy editor of ProMed, received information about a SARS-like disease in the Chinese city of Wuhan. Having checked the facts, she issued an alert to the worldwide network signalling the start of an outbreak of a highly infectious and dangerous disease. The new virus, SARS-CoV-2 spread rapidly from Wuhan causing a global pandemic of COVID-19. In this review, I examine the ways in which risk can provide i…

  • Understanding Policy Scandals in Historical Context

Open Access•Patrick Brown, Ruben Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Policy•2020•Referências: 43

The emergence of and reaction to policy scandals has been usefully studied through comparative case studies. Far less attention has been devoted, however, to the study of such scandals in long-term historical context. With the aim of illuminating longer-term social processes which shape the likelihood that (health)care scandals emerge, we delineate three areas where such changes are visible: a) changing formats of social relations and emotions wi…

  • Tom Horlick-Jones and risk work

    Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2018

In this review, I examine Tom Horlick-Jones’s contribution to risk work—the ways in which individuals in their everyday activities select and make sense of risk issues and take and subsequently account for actions in relationship to such issues. I consider Tom Horlick-Jones’s background as a natural science and the ways in which his concerns about the social consequences of science drew him to work on practical issues that effect everyday life su…

  • Choice, Risk, and Moral Judgment

    Open Access•Mandie Scamell, Andy Alaszewski•CHAPTER•Communicating Risk•2016

In this chapter we examine midwives’ discourses in relationship to risk and place of birth. We analyse the ways in which these discourses take place at the intersection of two discrete imperatives: to provide pregnant women with choice over where and how they give birth; and to protect mothers and babies from harm. When midwives’ assessment of risk of harm during birth is aligned with their assessment of the riskiness of a woman’s preferred place…

  • Anthropology and risk

    Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2015

In this review, I examine the contribution of social anthropology to the study of risk. I define social anthropology as the study of ‘other cultures’ and note that such studies have a long history, for example the Greeks and Romans were interested in exploring and understanding ‘barbarians’ and using such studies to reflect on their own society. However, in the early twentieth century, with the Cambridge Expedition to the Torres Straits and Malin…

  • Purity and danger

    Jane Alaszewska, Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2015

In this article, we draw on data from fieldwork on the Izu islands and from historical sources to examine the role of shamans in identifying and managing danger and the ways in which surviving practices reflect of the symbolism of premodern Japanese rituals. In most of contemporary Japan, misfortunes, such as illness or maritime accidents, are accounted for, predicted and managed and through modern science-based risk systems such as medicine. How…

  • The paradox of hope for working age adults recovering from stroke

    Open Access•Andy Alaszewski, Iain Wilkinson•ARTICLE•Health An Interdisciplinary…•2015•Referências: 35

This article draws on data from a Stroke Association–funded longitudinal study in South East England (2003–2006) that explored the experiences and recovery of 43 stroke survivors under 60 years. Participants were invited to take part in four interviews over an 18-month period and to complete a diary for 1 week each month during this period. Here, we chart their shifting attitudes towards the process of their recovery. We bring a focus to how this…

  • Vulnerablity and risk across the life course

    Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2013

This editorial forms part of a themed issue on vulnerability and risk across the life course. The six articles in this issue explore the issues that arise when key individuals are not considered competent to assess risks and make decisions. The articles by Bailey and her colleagues and by Cott and Tierne focus on older people whose competence is affected by cognitive impairment, Clarke and Edge and Eyles consider issues that affect babies and you…

  • Time-framing and health risks

Patrick Brown, Bob Heyman et al.•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2013

This special issue is the last in a four-part series Health Care Through the ‘Lens of Risk’, which focuses on risk categorisation, valuing, expecting and time-framing, respectively, and has been published in 2012–2013. The present editorial introduces the issue of time-framing in relation to an interview-based article, a guest editorial and six articles reporting findings from empirical research. The central argument of the editorial concerns the…

  • Fateful moments and the categorisation of risk

    Mandie Scamell, Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2012

In this article, we examine the ways in which risk is categorised in childbirth, and how such categorisation shapes decision-making in the risk management of childbirth. We consider the ways in which midwives focus on and highlight particular adverse events that threaten the normality of childbirth and the life of the mother and/or her baby. We argue that such a focus tends to override other elements of risk, especially the low probability of suc…

    Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2012

  • Drugs, risk and society

    Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2011

This themed issue of Health, Risk & Society on Drugs, Risk and Society brings together six articles reflecting the importance of drugs in the study of health risks. The articles fall into three groups. The articles by Davis and Abraham (2011) and Gardner and Drew (2011) explore the government of risk and the ways in which regulators use scientific expertise to identify and control risks. Both articles show the limitations of such expertise and th…

    Open Access•Patrick Brown, Patrick R Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2011•Citada por: 13•Referências: 24

Trust is vital for quality healthcare outcomes, yet existing research neglects the 'embodiedness' of the interactions on which trust is based. This article draws on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with cervical cancer patients. The significance of body work in winning or, on occasions, undermining trust emerged as a key theme within the responses. Interpretations of professionals' verbal and non-verbal presentations-of-self were …

  • Uncertainty in everyday life

    Andy Alaszewski, Kirstie Coxon•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2009

This editorial provides an introduction to and overview of the six papers published in this special issue on Uncertainty and Risk in Everyday Life. While uncertainty and risk are connected and the terms often used interchangeably, we argue here that the terms are not synonymous.'Risk' can be used both to describe the threat posed by uncertainty and the response to such threats. The approach to risk grounded in cognitive rationality involves collect…

  • The future of risk in social science theory and research

    Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2009

This issue involves a change in the usual format of Health, Risk & Society with the inclusion of two articles that debate the continuing utility of risk for sociological research. In this editorial I reflect on this debate on the future of sociological research on risk. The two protagonists, Judith Green and Jens Zinn, agree that risk has been a fruitful area of sociological research. It is a key focus of several contemporary macro theories of so…

  • The everyday experience of living with risk and uncertainty

    Andy Alaszewski, Kirstie Coxon•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2008

This editorial provides an overview of the articles included in the Special Issue of Health, Risk & Society on living with risk and uncertainty. The papers were originally given at the 2006 BSA Risk and Society Study group and the authors were invited to revise them from this Special Issue. In this Editorial, we identify several important themes within the papers. While it has become a commonplace that modern society is a ‘risk society,’ in which…

  • Risk, time and reason

Andy Alaszewski, Adam Burge et al.•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2007

Over time, a number of alternative approaches to risk have developed and, while these co-exist, they structure time in different ways and are grounded in different combinations of cognitive rationality and affect. The initial conceptualization of risk, which remains prominent, was based on the use of knowledge from past events to provide the context for choices which minimize harm in the future. It underpins structured approaches to decision maki…

  • Risk, uncertainty and knowledge

  • Diaries as a source of suffering narratives

    Andy Alaszewski•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2006

In this article, the ways in which diaries can be used as narratives of risk are explored. It is noted that unsolicited diaries appear to be an especially valuable resource for researchers who wish to explore the nature of suffering. They also provide a way of avoiding some of the moral dilemmas created when researchers solicit narratives of suffering and represent accounts which contextualize suffering within a personal biography. Such texts pro…

It illustrates this through three examples that raise questions of risk in relationship to people with learning disabilities: on community care, alcohol and sexuality. It concludes that risk has often been negatively associated with danger, but that sensitive risk mana…

And, if that was not enough, we confessed our ambition that the journal would act as a mechanism…
