Metaphorical analysis of social worker candidates’ perceptions of homeless people
The aim of this study is to determine the perceptions of social work undergraduate students about homeless people. In this qualitative research study, a phenomenological approach and metaphor analysis technique were used. The data were analysed by the metaphor analysis method, and categories and themes were formed. Metaphors were collected in seven categories: emotions, nature, animals, objects, street, disadvantaged groups and negative attitudes…

Turkey as Producer and Exporter of Anti-Gender Politics
This article argues that Turkey has become both a producer and exporter of anti-gender politics through the coordinated efforts of the state and a dense network of Islamic civil society organizations. While anti-gender mobilizations elsewhere often emerge from bottom-up coalitions of religious, conservative, and right-wing actors, Turkey’s model is distinctly state-led. In Turkey, anti-gender discourse and activism are orchestrated through state …

The mutual constitution of illiberal civil society and neoauthoritarianism
Recent scholarship on state-civil society dynamics in neoauthoritarian contexts demonstrates that the space for civil society is rapidly shrinking worldwide. Faced with legal, administrative, and extralegal measures that restrict operations and resources, civil society actors are forced to choose between marginalization or co-optation. This article examines the ruling party-Islamic civil society symbiosis in Turkey and identifies mutual constitut…
Partners in Patriarchy
Faith-based organizations (FBO) have become active vehicles of neoliberal governmentality in the last decade. FBOs have been assuming increasing responsibilities in service delivery and welfare provision. They have also become key actors in cultivating the ideational environment that facilitates the effective functioning of market rationality. The empirical findings of this research demonstrate that faith-based organizations in Turkey equip neoli…
Rationalization
It is likely that the concept of rationalization is most often linked to the work of Sigmund Freud on psychological defense mechanisms. However, in sociology the concept is most often associated with the work of Max Weber and his followers. For Weber, rationalization, at least to its fullest extent, occurred only in the modern west. Other parts of the world, for example India and China, failed to rationalize to any great extent because of barrier…
Vernacularization of liberal civil society by transnational Islamist NGO networks
Over the last two decades, informal Islamic networks have been re-establishing themselves as formal NGOs and building transnational coalitions. These newly formed faith-based NGOs retain their original agendas: promoting Islamic revival and global solidarity by supporting Muslim communities around the world. However, they now reposition themselves as 'civil society initiatives' and selectively appropriate the liberal civil society discourse. In t…
