    Open Access•Sigurd M Nordli Oppegaard•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•2025•References: 23

Working conditions on digital platforms are generally found to be precarious. This article explores why drivers working for taxi platforms in Oslo, Norway nonetheless take the 'gig.' It draws on an extensive fieldwork in the industry and shows that the drivers see driving as not only one of very few available opportunities in the Norwegian labor market, but also as a step up. The drivers highlight the comfortable work environment, absence of dire…

    Open Access•Sigurd M Nordli Oppegaard•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 35

Based on a case study of taxi platforms in Oslo, Norway comprised of interviews with drivers and an ethnographic fieldwork working a driver, this article explores the platformization of the Norwegian taxi industry and the drivers' working conditions through Marx's concept of subsumption. In Norway, taxi platforms emerged in an already formally subsumed industry. The platforms have developed a new market segment, and also introduced an additional …

  • Social order in the de-differentiated society

    Open Access•J F Rye, Sigurd M Nordli Oppegaard•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 28

The article problematises the assumption that modern society is characterised by institutional differentiation as a unidirectional process. Inspired by Deleuze's sketch of the 'society of control', in this article the authors explore institutional de-differentiation in contemporary society. They illustrate the process of de-differentiation by developments in the penal institution, employing empirical materials from the Norwegian prison system. Th…

  • Platform work in the Nordic models

Open Access•Sigurd M Nordli Oppegaard, Kristin Jesnes•BOOK•Platform work in the Nordic models•2020

This report explores how the platform economy is evolving in the Nordic countries and how its evolution is influenced by the Nordic labour market models and vice-versa. Here, we include all the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden), except Iceland, where platform work is still very marginal. While remaining a marginal phenomenon in the Nordic countries, platform work can be seen as one important case in which many key aspects of …

The year 2020 was scheduled to become the year of far-reaching changes in the regulation of the Norwegian taxi industry. As the year progressed, and the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded, it turned out more dramatic than anyone could have foreseen. This essay offers a brief overview of the history and organisation of the Norwegian taxi industry, followed by findings from a research project, where we, among other things, explored how taxi owners and driv…
