I Swear I Saw This: Drawings In Fieldwork Notebooks, Namely My Own
This is a drawing in my notebook of some people I saw lying down at the entrance to a freeway tunnel in Medellin in July 2006. There were even people lying in the pitchblack tunnel. It was 1:30 in the afternoon.

Shamanism, Colonialism, and the Wild Man: A Study in Terror and Healing
Working with the image of the Indian shaman as Wild Man, reveals not the magic of the shaman but that of the politicizing fictions creating the effect of the real. This extraordinary book . . . will encourage ever more critical and creative explorations. Fernando Coronil, American Journal of Sociology Taussig has brought a formidable collection of data from arcane literary, journalistic, and biographical sources to bear on . . . questions …
Nypd Blues: Tradução de Taussig, Michael. “Nypd Blues”. In: Walter Benjamin’s Grave. Chicago: Uiversity of Chicago Press, 2006

Palma Africana: A Novel
Michael Taussig's *Palma Africana: A Novel* delves into the complex and often brutal history of oil palm cultivation in Colombia. Through a blend of fiction, ethnography, and historical analysis, Taussig explores the social, economic, and environmental consequences of this industry, tracing its roots in colonial exploitation and its ongoing impact on local communities. The novel examines themes of violence, displacement, ecological devastation, a…

Law in a Lawless Land: Diary of a Limpieza in Colombia
Michael Taussig, Law in a Lawless Land: Diary of a Limpieza in Colombia, Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2005,222 pages. The recent capture of leaders of Colombia's two most notorious guerrilla organizations, reported decreases in country's homicide rates, and a well-televised ceremony in 2003 depicting surrender of arms by a group of paramilitaries may lead one to believe that Colombia is finally at peace. And it may lead one to believe tha…
Shamanism, Colonialism, and the Wild Man: A Study in Terror and Healing
Michael Taussig's "Shamanism, Colonialism, and the Wild Man: A Study in Terror and Healing" explores the intersection of shamanism, colonialism, and the construction of the "wild man" in the Putumayo region of the Amazon during the rubber boom. Taussig argues that the terror inflicted upon the indigenous population by the colonial rubber regime became deeply intertwined with their existing shamanistic practices and beliefs. He examines how the co…

The Genesis of Capitalism Amongst a South American Peasantry: Devil's Labor and the Baptism of Money
What does wage labor and capital mean to a peasantry that is subjected to rapid rural proletarianization and what is the basis of that meaning?I wish to discuss an aspect of this question in the light of certain ideological reactions manifested by a South American lowland peasantry as expanding sugar plantations absorb their lands and peasants are converted into landless wage laborers. In the southern extremities of the Cauca Valley, Colombia, it…

What Color Is the Sacred
Over the past thirty years, visionary anthropologist Michael Taussig has crafted a highly distinctive body of work. Playful, enthralling, and whip-smart, his writing makes ingenious connections between ideas, thinkers, and things. An extended meditation on the mysteries of color and the fascination they provoke, What Color Is the Sacred? is the next step on Taussig's remarkable intellectual path. Following his interest in magic and surrealism, hi…

This article explores the complex interplay between indigenous beliefs concerning the devil and the burgeoning capitalist market economy in South America. Up Off Their Knees: Servanthood in Southwest Colombia
Live-in female servants form an important part of many Third World societies. It is therefore astonishing that so little is written about them and that they are hardly ever featured in discussions concerning the reproduction of the power that disfigures these neocolonial societies as a whole. Unconsciously accepted by radicals as much as by upholders of the status quo, female service is secured by the unthinking way people take it for granted, ju…

"In a series of intriguing essays ranging over terror, State fetishism, shamanic healing in Latin America, homesickness, and the place of the tactile eye in both magic and modernity, anthropologist Michael Taussig puts into representational practice a curious type of engaged writing. Based on a paranoiac vision of social control and its understanding as in a permanent state of emergency leaving no room for contemplation between signs and things, …
