Geochemical identity of pre-Dogon and Dogon populations at Bandiagara (Mali, 11th–20th cent. AD)
The future of Mali's past
One of the greatest disasters for African archaeology is the systematic plundering of archaeological sites for the antiquities trade (e.g. Schmidt & McIntosh 1996; ICOM 1994). An eloquent proof of this plundering is the beautiful catalogue 'Earth and ore', published in 1997 by Schaedler. Of the 668 objects illustrated fullcolour in this catalogue all come, except for a dozen objects and some forgeries, from recent looting of sites in Mali, Niger,…
The Dia archaeological project
Mali is a country with a rich history and diverse cultures. Its cultural heritage is, however, threatened by both the pillage of archaeological sites and illicit trade (ICOM 1995; Bedaux & Rowlands, this volunle). Looting has dramatically increased in recent years, especially in the Inland Delta of the Niger, and has obliged Malian authorities to take measures to counteract this destruction. Within the framework of a long-term Malian-Dutch cultur…

Tellem, reconnaissance archéologique d'une culture de l'ouest africain au Moyen-Age
A bs tract This article continues the presentation of the archeological findings from the caves in the Bandiagara Cliffs in the land of the Dogon (Mali). The pottery of the Sanga region can be descriptively divided into four major types : Toloy, ancient Tellem, middle and late Tellem, and recent Dogon. Hypotheses about datings are made, and the findings are compared with the Do gen's presentday pottery, which seems to have been strongly influence…

The cotton and woollen cloths are mostly in tabby and weft- faced rep. They include a.o. robes, blankets and caps
