Dividing the Nation: The Weaponization of "Terrorism" in Russian Influence Operations in the USA
Rethinking Critical Sociology, Transcending the Transcendental
This article calls for a rethinking of critical sociology. Representing classical critical sociology, the Bourdieusian paradigm illustrated domination, but its negative foundation removed actors' power, privileging sociological knowledge as capable of identifying (social) transcendental categories of thought. Latour's constructivism challenged this privilege, giving actors the political power of aggregating collectives around their common concern…

Protest and the experience of time: Action as synchronizing temporalities
This paper utilizes American pragmatism and phenomenology to illustrate that scholars must engage with both memories of the past and hopes for the future if we want to know how either influences activists' actions in the present. A synthesis of these theoretical approaches highlights how, in the real experience of time, the past, present, and future are in constant flux and affect one another, shaping both our valuations of a moment and the actio…
Our actions define who we are: Pragmatic Praxis and Tactical Tastes
In this paper, we highlight the utility and implications of the sociological pragmatic theory of action, in particular for the study of social movements. Drawing on the classical theories of George Herbert Mead and John Dewey, we illustrate that there are moments in social life where we cannot strictly ascribe rational/strategic or identity/cultural logics to actors’ actions. During socially indeterminate periods, people are able to reflect upon …
French sociological pragmatism: Inheritor and innovator in the American pragmatic and sociological phenomenological traditions
Philosophical pragmatism has seen a revival within the sociological discourse. We bring three strands of this approach into direct dialogue with one another. Anglophone and German scholars have brought pragmatists such as George Herbert Mead back to the forefront of our understandings of social action. In a parallel development, scholars such as Alfred Schütz incorporated Husserlian phenomenology with American pragmatism, reinforcing a specific m…
Figurative Politics: How Activists Lead by Example to Create Change
Scholars and activists have recently taken particular interest in prefigurative politics, a type of action where activists embody their ideal social order in the present, pushing for change through leading by example. However, the prefigurative politics concept has had limited use in broader understandings of protest. This is because: (1) prefigurative politics became associated with leftist and antihierarchical positions; (2) prefigurative polit…
Limits of Empire: The French Colonial State and Local Patrimonialism in North Africa
The article shows that the concept of patrimonialism is useful for the analysis not only of nation-states, but also of local and imperial power structures. Highlighting the limits of empires, we consider how local conditions shaped the strategies of colonial states in the process of empire building. We argue that the strength of local patrimonial networks before colonization, coupled with the sequencing of colonial conquests, either facilitated o…
