A measure of college student trust in their instructor
Introduction In this study we aimed to develop a psychometrically validated instrument to measure college students’ trust in their instructor. Recent studies have shown that student trust is positively associated with desired outcome variables like student buy-in, engagement, final grade, and intention to persist in science. Clearly defining and measuring college students’ trust in their instructor can inform teaching strategies, enhance student …
More frequent utilization of evidence-based teaching practices leads to increasingly positive student outcomes
Introduction Evidence-based teaching (EBT) practices benefit students, yet our understanding of how frequently these strategies should be utilized in STEM courses is less established. Methods In this study, students (n = 894) of faculty who learned about how to implement EBTs from the Summer Institutes for Scientific Teaching were surveyed. The students rated the frequency of implementation of six types of EBTs after the course and completed a fo…

Dual Master of Social Work - Master of Public Health (MSW/MPH): Lessons Learned from Program Development and Implementation in a Southeastern University
While there has been a proliferation of MSW/MPH programs concurrent with dramatic changes in the U.S. health system, there is minimal research on these programs. The purpose of this article is to describe the conceptualization, development, and implementation of an innovative MSW/MPH program at a southeastern university-the only such program in the state. Our goal as the first two directors of the program, serving consecutively, is to share knowl…

Dual Master of Social Work / Master of Public Health Degrees: Perceptions of Graduates and Field Instructors
Despite growing interest in Master of Social Work/Master of Public Health (MSW/MPH) programs, limited research literature is available on MSW/MPH graduates and none has examined field instructors' perceptions of MSW/MPH students. This study describes the perceptions and experiences of MSW/MPH alumni and field instructors from a recently implemented MSW/MPH program at the University of Georgia. Electronic surveys were administered to 32 alumni and…

Dating Trajectories From Middle to High School: Association With Academic Performance and Drug Use
This study identifies trajectories of dating from sixth to twelfth grade and describes the academic performance (teacher‐rated study skills and high school dropout) and self‐reported drug use associated with these trajectories, in a diverse sample randomly selected in sixth grade. Using a group‐based, semiparametric procedure, we identified four dating trajectories: low (16%), increasing (24%), high middle school (22%), and frequent (38%). Studen…
Psychological Dating Violence Perpetration and Victimization: Trajectories From Middle to High School
Despite evidence documenting the negative consequences, psychological dating violence occurs frequently in adolescent dating relationships. No information exists on the trajectories that adolescents follow and their association to nonphysical peer violence. The sample comprised 624 randomly selected 6th graders. In yearly surveys from 6th through 12th grade, 550 of the 624 students reported dating at least twice during the 3 months prior to compl…
Evolution of a Virus: The Framing of HIV/Aids in Social Work Journals
Over the past two decades, increasing emphasis has been placed on evidence-based practice (EBP) in the social work literature. At the core of the EBP movement is the philosophical position that social work practice should be guided by scientific findings and that social workers should remain current with the scientific knowledge base of the profession (Howard, McMillen, & Pollio, 2003). An important obstacle to widespread adoption of EBP, however…
Resolving Identity Conflict: Gay, Lesbian, and Queer Individuals with a Christian Upbringing
Gay, lesbian, and queer individuals with a Christian upbringing often experience conflict between religion and sexual identity. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to understand how gay, lesbian, and queer-identified individuals with a Christian upbringing resolve conflict between sexual identity and religious beliefs. Analysis of in-depth interviews with 15 participants led to 3 conclusions. First, resolving the discord between sexual …
Liminal Living at an Extended Stay Hotel: Feeling "Stuck" in a Housing Solution
As a result of unaffordable housing, many of America's working poor are forced to seek shelter in hotels to avoid homelessness. The concept of liminality has been used in discussions of place to describe the subjective experience of feeling in-between two states of being. Research is scant on the liminal experiences of low-income hotel residents, who are culturally invisible in society. This paper draws from data qualitatively collected via semi-…
Building a Bridge: Counselor Educator-School Counselor Collaboration
Despite calls for collaboration between counselor educators and school counselors, little is known about how collaboratives develop and what, if any, benefits are derived by the participants. In this article, the authors describe an 8-year collaboration between a group of university-based counselor educators and school counselors in 1 partnership community. Interviews with selected members of the collaborative were conducted to assess the partici…

Adaptation to HIV Infection: The Development of Coping Strategies Over Time
The purpose of this study was to understand the use of coping strategies in adapting to an HIV-positive diagnosis. Also, the question of whether there was an underlying developmental process, in the sense of movement from less adaptive to more adaptive strategies, was addressed. In-depth interviews were conducted with 18 HIV-positive individuals younger than age 45. Analysis of the qualitative data using the constant comparative method revealed t…
