Empowerment and gender dynamics in the post-production process for rice in Eastern Uganda
Using data collected from 515 downstream rice value chain agents in Eastern Uganda, we analyse gendered participation and its effect on empowerment. We apply a probit model and an endogenous treatment effects model to assess participation in milled rice trading and its causal effect on empowerment. Results show that men dominate the downstream nodes of the rice value chain, and time spent on reproductive activities reduces the probability of wome…

Estimating oligopsonistic market power in Uganda’s rice industry
The study applies the conjectural variations approach to determine whether Ugandan rice traders exercise oligopsony power in the market for domestic rice. The trader margin for milled rice is found to be 10.20% on average. Using an econometric system of four equations, the null hypothesis of competitive behaviour holds at different price elasticities of farm supply, ranging from inelastic to elastic supply. This implies that there is no evidence …
Consumer preferences for rice in East Africa
Purpose Improving the competitiveness of East Africa's rice industries necessitates increased and viable production of rice of the quality desired by consumers. This paper aims to understand consumer preferences for rice quality attributes in Uganda and Kenya to inform the countries' rice breeding programs and value chain development interventions. Design/methodology/approach Rice samples are obtained from retail markets in various districts/coun…
A gendered outlook into the adoption of improved rice varieties in Madagascar
This study investigates the household decision-making process toward adopting improved rice varieties. The mixed-method approach is applied to identify the influential factors and demonstrating the importance of considering gender aspects. The study was conducted in Madagascar Highlands (Vakinankaratra and Haute Matsiatra regions) with a sample of 164 male and female farmers. The quantitative models explored gendered differences for adoption, and…
Targeting millers to improve rice marketing in Uganda
Purpose Improving milling quality is expected to improve the quality of domestic rice and hence the competitiveness of Uganda's rice industry. Therefore, this study aims to assess the determinants of four aspects of milling, namely, choice of milling technology, millers' perceptions of the importance of paddy quality attributes, milling return and milling capacity. Design/methodology/approach Multinomial logit, semi-nonparametric extended ordered…
Gender considerations in development and utilisation of technological innovations
The article investigates the linkages between gender, development and utilisation of technological innovations in Ghana. The study adopted an exploratory design and used thematic content analysis for the qualitative data derived from in-depth interviews with rice scientists and farmers. The findings revealed that research institutions lack the requisite mandate, capacity and resources to mainstream gender issues in research activities. The findin…

Gum arabic collection in northern Kenya
Gum arabic is a resin collected from several types of Acacia tree growing most densely in arid and semi-arid lands in East Africa and the Sahel. Kenya is particularly well endowed with gum-yielding trees but exports only small amounts of gum. Methodology: A combination of descriptive livelihood and value chain analysis was used to gain insight into the socio-economic characteristics of collectors and the role of gum arabic in their livelihood. Re…
