    Peter Kollock•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•1998•Cited by: 253•References: 106

The study of social dilemmas is the study of the tension between individual and collective rationality. In a social dilemma, individually reasonable behavior leads to a situation in which everyone is worse off. The first part of this review is a discussion of categories of social dilemmas and how they are modeled. The key two-person social dilemmas (Prisoner's Dilemma, Assurance, Chicken) and multiple-person social dilemmas (public goods dilemmas…

Peter Kollock, Philip Blumstein et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1994•Cited by: 3

This paper examines how individuals in intimate relationships come to decide whether their relationship is equitable. We study two types of intimate relationships-married couples and heterosexual cohabiting couples-using questionnaire data to analyse how a variety of factors affect the judgment of equity. Peter Kollock•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1994•Cited by: 171

    Peter Kollock•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1993•Cited by: 46•References: 16

Using computer simulations that permit degrees of cooperation and introduce noise into the environment, I explore the benefits of strategies in which actors use different accounting systems to track ongoing exchanges. By relaxing some stringent assumptions of past work, I chart the conditions under which cooperation may emerge when actors can show degrees of cooperation and when actors 'moves are misperceived. Results provide evidence that strate…

  • Social Exchange Theory as a Conceptual Framework for Teaching the Sociological Perspective

    Jodi A O'Brien, Peter Kollock•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•1991•Cited by: 1

We present social exchange theory as a conceptual frameworkfor developing the sociological imagination. Our central thesis is that this framework provides a corrective for two trends in teaching social psychology: an overemphasis on social forces as the determinants of behavior and a hesitancy to bring values into the classroom. Exchange theory emphasizes not simply the constraining effects of social structure, but also how individual action coll…

  • Personal Relationships

Philip Blumstein, Peter Kollock•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•1988

In this chapter we review recent literature on personal relationships. Conceptual issues are raised regarding the definition of close or personal relationships, and various approaches to the subject matter are characterized. We then consider the problem of creating a property space of types of relationships, necessary, we think, for the mature development of the field. We advocate and illustrate a comparative approach to personal relationships in…

  • Sex and Power in Interaction

Peter Kollock, Philip Blumstein et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1985•Cited by: 84•References: 11

This paper examines conversational behavior which previous research suggests is differentiated on the basis of sex. Interaction is conceptualized in terms of a sexual division of labor wherein men dominate conversation and women behave in a supportive manner. The literature raises the question of whether these differences in conversational patterns are tied to power as well as sex. A study was designed to determine which of a set of variables ref…
