  • The Connection Between Anxiety and Empathy in Social Work Students

Open Access•Mark Shaffer, Linda Houser et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Social Work•2025

Anxiety and empathy are familiar concepts for social work students. This study explored levels of anxiety and empathy in a group of students to understand if there was a connection between the two. The participants were current social work students studying at the undergraduate or graduate level. They were studying in in-person and online classrooms. A total of sixty-five participants completed two instruments, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (G…

  • Integrating Abduction and Inference to the Best Explanation

    Open Access•Mark Shaffer•ARTICLE•European Journal of Pragmatism…•2022

Tomis Kapitan’s work on Peirce’s conception of abduction was instrumental for our coming to see how Peircean abduction both relates to and is importantly different from inference to the best explanation (IBE). However, he ultimately concluded that Peirce’s conception of abduction was a muddle. Despite the deeply problematic nature of Peirce’s theory of abduction in these respects, Kapitan’s work on Peircean abduction offers insight into the natur…

  • Some epistemological concerns about dissociative identity disorder and diagnostic practices in psychology

    Mark Shaffer, Michael J Shaffer et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophical Psychology•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In this paper we argue that dissociative identity disorder (DID) is best interpreted as a causal model of a (possible) post-traumatic psychological process, as a mechanical model of an abnormal psychological condition. From this perspective we examine and criticize the evidential status of DID, and we demonstrate that there is really no good reason to believe that anyone has ever suffered from DID so understood. This is so because the proponents …

  • Bayesian Confirmation of Theories That Incorporate Idealizations

    Open Access•Mark Shaffer, Michael J Shaffer•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 37

Following Nancy Cartwright and others, I suggest that most (if not all) theories incorporate, or depend on, one or more idealizing assumptions. I then argue that such theories ought to be regimented as counterfactuals, the antecedents of which are simplifying assumptions. If this account of the logical form of theories is granted, then a serious problem arises for Bayesians concerning the prior probabilities of theories that have counterfactual f…

  • Clinical Engineering: An In-Depth Review of Its Economic Potential

    Mark Shaffer, Michael J Shaffer•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1977

Clinical Engineers are currently employed in hospitals to see that the more complex instrumentation is electrically safe and well maintained. Such an objective fails to capitalize on the economic advantages which can be derived from specialist management. This paper proposes that the objective be broadened to cover the application of engineering technology for lower cost-higher quality health care. The functions involved and the staff needed to a…
