This paper summarizes the results of recent excavations (1982-90) at the Middle Paleolithic site of Kebara Cave. Work at the cave by earlier excavators is also discussed. Although analysis of the Kebara materials is still far from completed, an overview of the current stage of the investigations includes (1) a synthesis of the site's complex stratigraphy and dating; (2) a description of the spatial patterning of hearths, ash lenses, and bone and …

  • Le Contexte stratigraphique des occupations paléolithiques de la grotte de Kébara (Israël)

    Paul Goldberg, H Laville•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1988•Cited by: 5

The deepest deposits so far found at Kebara have been exposed only in a relatively limited area and their significance is still not well established. They have yielded no archaeological material. The largest part of the Mousterian sequence is formed by fire places separated by scatters of ash. The perfect preservation of theses structures indicates calm conditions of sedimentation under a relatively stable climate. The only disturbances identifia…

  • Paleoecology at La Riera (Asturias, Spain) [and Comments and Reply]

    L G Straus, José Luis Altuna Vásquez et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1981•Cited by: 22

Excavations were conducted at La Riera to test hypotheses concerning variability among Upper Paleolithic/Mesolithic artifact assemblages and to define and begin to explain changing hunter-gatherer adaptations to the coastal region at the end of the Wurm and the beginning of the Holocene. The 36 strata contain assemblages that can be assigned to Aurignacian(?), Solutrean, Magdalenian, Azilian, and Asturian culture-stratigraphic units. However, the…

  • The perigordian V industries in périgord

    H Laville, Jean‐Philippe Rigaud et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1973•Cited by: 17•References: 6

Recent excavations have provided more exact evidence about the relationship between different fades of the Perigordian V complex in south‐western France. Various previous classifications and interpretations are discussed and the contrast is now pointed out between assemblages where the emphasis is placed on either Gravettes and microgravettes, or Noailles burins or flat burins (burins plans). These three aspects are shown by excavations, especial…
