No place for young women? The impact of internal migration on adult sex ratios in rural East Germany
Shortages of women in rural areas occur in many highly urbanized countries. Rural East Germany is an ideal case for studying this phenomenon because of its low adult sex ratio (ASR)-men greatly outnumber women-coupled with high outmigration among young adults. This study identifies how internal migration between rural and urban areas contributes to the shortage of young adult women. We use data on inter-county migration flows (for years 2002-21) …
How do global crises affect privileged migrants? Return migration of German emigrants one year into the Covid-19 pandemic
This article discusses how global crises affect the return of international migrants. It develops a theoretical model and tests this contribution empirically taking Covid-19 as an instance of a global crisis. Existing studies have treated migration and mobility mostly as phenomena of virus dispersion. The reverse impact of Covid-19 on migration has attracted less attention. This article draws on a unique probability-sample of German emigrants to …
The Past, Present and Future of CPoS
In this editorial note, we reflect on the trajectory of Comparative Population Studies (CPoS) over the last decades, highlight major milestones along the road, and sketch our hopes and ideas for its future development. In 1975, the predecessor journal of CPoS named ZfB was established as the scientific journal of the newly founded German Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB). As the Institute grew its international collaborations and th…
To be, or not to be ‘urban’? A multi-modal method for the differentiated measurement of the degree of urbanization
Today, 56.6% of the world's population is urban and the trend is rising; in Germany, the urbanization process is almost complete at 80.3%. This is the ubiquitously used narrative. Surprisingly, the figures behind it are rarely questioned. The spatial statistics responsible for this meta-narrative are, however, prone to ambiguity. They suffer from a lack of systematic empirical justification, and from cross-national differences in cut-off values u…
The impact of the Covid‐19 pandemic on internal migration in Germany: A descriptive analysis
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected economies, labor markets, health care, education and tourism around the globe in unprecedented ways. However, little research has yet been devoted to the impact that the pandemic might have had on internal migration. This study aims to address this gap by determining how the intensity and spatial patterns of internal migration changed between 2019 and 2020 in Germany. We draw on data from the population register…
Years of East-West Migration in Germany: A Synthesis of the Literature and Potential Directions for Future Research
The reunification of the socialist German Democratic Republic and the capitalist Federal Republic of Germany presents a unique setting for studying the impact of socio-economic and political change on migration. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the interdisciplinary literature on migration between East and West Germany since reunification, conducted in disciplines such as economics, demography, sociology, and human geography. We synt…
Internal migration and housing costs—A panel analysis for Germany
The emergent crisis of affordable urban housing coupled with a sustained decline in internal migration rates in many Western countries warrants a thorough exploration of the relation between housing costs and internal migration. Although it is well established that housing is an important contextual determinant of migration flows, little attention has thus far been paid to the ways in which rising housing costs shape internal migration. In this p…
The Role of Internal Migration as a Driver of Regional Population Change in Europe
The turnaround in internal migration between East and West Germany over the period 1991 to 2018
After losing a population of more than 1.2 million through migration to the West, in 2017 East Germany recorded net internal migration gains for the very first time since reunification
The Impact of Internal Migration on the Spatial Distribution of Population in Germany over the Period 1991-2017
In 1885 and 1889 Ravenstein published two seminal papers on the role of migration in changing population distribution. This article analyses the importance of internal migration for shaping the spatial population distribution of Germany in the last three decades. We use a time-series dataset of annual inter-county migration flows from the German population register for the years 1991 to 2017. Population density is used as proxy measure for settle…

Age, Period, and Cohort Effects on Migration of the Baby Boomers in Australia: Disentangling Age, Period, and Cohort Effects on Migration in Australia
The distinctive migration behaviour of the baby boom generation is commonly attributed to cohort size effects, but evidence to date has been drawn primarily from the US context. This paper focuses on inter-cohort differences in the intensity and pattern of internal migration in Australia with particular attention to the Australian baby boomer generation as it has moved through the life course. A series of generalised linear models are fitted to m…
Visualizing Australian internal and international migration flows
Migration research in Australia has tended to focus on internal migration, partly due to the paucity of international migration statistics at the regional scale, especially for emigration. In this regional graphic, internal and international migration flows for 50 major regions of Australia are presented using census data on internal migration and immigration over the one-year interval before the 2011 Census together with new estimates of regiona…
Internal Migration in Germany, 1995-2010: New Insights into East-West Migration and Re-urbanisation
Over the last two decades, patterns of internal migration in Germany have been discussed under the headings of East-West movements and sub- and re-urbanisation. This paper argues that the intense scientific and public debate that ignited about the possible causes and consequences of internal migration should be based on a clear understanding of how internal migration flows impact on regional population change. Using the German Internal Migration …
