A Bounding Approach to Age–Period–Cohort Analysis: A Demonstration Using Public Crime Concerns in Germany
How many children do couples have when they break up? Educational stratification in parity at separation
This study investigated educational differences in parity distribution at separation. Using the Harmonized Histories and GGS-II data sets, we examined unions ending in separation in 1995-2004 and in 2011-20 across 12 countries in Europe and North America, comparing them with a matched group of intact unions. Our analysis revealed a negative educational gradient in parity at separation. The mean number of children at separation decreased with high…
Reconstructing Prospective Intergenerational Educational Mobility in 12 Countries
In this article, we reconstruct prospective intergenerational educational mobility and explore fertility's role in this process for women born between 1925 and 1950 in 12 European countries. We do so by combining high-quality retrospective data (Generations and Gender Survey) and low-requirement prospective datasets using an inferential method developed and advanced in prior research. Our analysis shows that the negative educational fertility gra…
Untangling the Role of Assortative Mating in Educational Reproduction in Twelve European Countries
In this study, we explore how educational differences in demographic behavior – in particular, mating patterns and fertility – mediate the intergenerational reproduction of educational inequality in twelve European countries. Although this research interest itself is not new, we contribute to this debate by adopting a prospective approach and scaling it to include multiple countries and cohorts. To this end, we leverage a series of complementary …
Signals, educational decision-making, and inequality: A comment on the formal model by Holm, Hjorth-Trolle, and Jæger
In this comment, I explore the assumptions and the implications of the formal (mathematical) model proposed by Holm, Hjorth-Trolle, and Jæger (HHJ) in their article in European Sociological Review, 35(4) (2019). The model links educational decision-making to social background inequality and academic ability and is said to conform to the key propositions of the Relative-Risk-Aversion theory and the Compensatory-Advantage-Model. Its most original c…

Revisiting the historical trend of educational stratification in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia
The Demographic Echo of War and educational attainment in Soviet Russia
Research on Western countries has shown that birth cohort size is negatively related to educational attainment. It has offered complementary interpretations of this association â optimal schooling choices versus cohort overcrowding effects â that are diffi
A U-turn in inequality in college attainment by parental education in the US
Slipping Past the Test: Heterogeneous Effects of Social Background in the Context of Inconsistent Selection Mechanisms in Higher Education
In this article, we analyze how the existence of alternative pathways to higher education, which implies different selection mechanisms, shapes social inequality in educational attainment. We focus on the Russian educational system, in which higher education can be accessed from academic and vocational tracks, but the rules of admission to higher education from these tracks are different. Access through the academic track is highly selective due …

Russian Neo-Etacratic Society and its Stratification: Discovering Real Social Groups
Current empirical sociology features a limited set of indicators for associating individuals with certain social groups (classes or strata). European sociologists rely heavily on such an informative descriptor as occupation, which has become institutionalized and thus produces certain requirements of human, social and cultural resources for individuals to perform the underlying functions. However, this indicator manifests at least two substantial…
