Early Epigravettian backed pieces from layer O of Grotta della Cala (Southern Italy). A techno-typological and use-wear integrated approach
Integrated techno-typological and use-wear analyses of Epigravettian backed pieces. • Occurrence of lithic projectiles in the form of backed and shouldered points. • Backed pieces potentially associated with piercing and cutting activities. • Manufacture of backed pieces locally documented. • Introduction of armatures made of allochthonous raw materials into the site. Although hunting was the main subsistence activity of Palaeolithic hunter-gathe…
Environmental changes and human occupations between MIS 15 and MIS 14 in Central Italy
Mesolithic Occupations During the Boreal Climatic Fluctuations at La Baume de Monthiver (Var, France)
The Mesolithic technology in Western Europe depicts the last cultural expressions and adaptations of hunter-gatherers before the adoption of Neolithic agro-pastoral practices. Many questions arise when investigating the timing, nature, and historical significance of the Mesolithic. The development of the Mesolithic culture is usually associated with the onset of milder environmental conditions at the beginning of the Holocene. Hunter-gatherer soc…
Techno-economic behaviours during Middle Pleistocene
The recent excavation of level ALB-42 of Valle Giumentina open air site (Italy) has yielded 407 lithic artefacts and some Red Deer bone fragments, showing anthropic marks. Lithic refits appear in this clayey-silty paleo-sol developed during an interstadial phase, assigned to MIS 12b (c. 450 ka) according to sedimentary studies and radiometric dating (40 Ar/ 39 Ar and ESR-U/Th). Here we present taphonomic and spatial studies and a techno-economic …

Hunter‐gatherer mobility and embedded raw‐material procurement strategies in the mediterranean upper paleolithic
Since the early 1980s, the sourcing of lithic raw materials has become central to studies of the territorial range and mobility strategies of Pleistocene foraging societies. Results have been fruitful but somehow repetitive. We will discuss the embedded procurement strategy, which presumes that raw material acquisition was part of other subsistence activities rather than an autonomous technological task. We argue that this theoretical assumption,…
