Hermeneutics and Discourse: Further Reflections on Designer Babies
A previous article demonstrated a consensus about denying permission for the cosmetic genetic manipulation of human embryos (Rettig, 2008). The present article raises this very complex issue again but from a more in-depth perspective, both theoretical and discursive. Participants discussed the issue from more diverse views, and did not come to a definitive consensus, thereby raising the question of the social reality or “truth” about the morality…
Justice of a Different Kind: The Original Kibbutz
The aim of this article is to compare and contrast basic moral principles of justice, as articulated by Rawls (1999) and by a presumably utopian society (the original Israeli Kibbutz) that purposefully attempted to design a community that was just and free, by collectivizing it. The principles it evolved were noble but its outcome was doomed to failure because by making social justice the dominant goal it did not allow for sufficiently free liber…
Quantum Discourse with Hyperscanning and its Potential Implications
Recent studies of hyperscanning using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) reported some findings of two-person games involving cooperation and competition. The studies found that certain social indicators, including benign reciprocity, personal agency and trust increased oxygenated blood flow in differentially localized areas (cingulate region) of the brain in both players. The studies raise critical issues pertaining to reality, certainty, ethics, …
Designer Babies: A Discursive Justification of a Moral Dilemma
Eight mature graduate students formed a simulated Citizen Jury to deliberate on the ethics of the genetic engineering of an embryo for the singular purpose of enhancement of the offspring. After three separate sessions the “jurors” came to a rational majority consensus disavowing such a practice, and delineating the reasons for the negation. These include issues of freedom and autonomy, inequality, the negation of natural evolution, and the impli…
Human Inquiry Systems: Understanding Everyday Social Life And Its Stresses
Ever since the rise of modern psychology questions arose as to how to scientifically study human behavior, whether from a socio-cultural perspective (geisteswissenschftlich) or by means of a more rigorous (positive) approach. However once psychology was defined as the study of behavior, it included animal behavior, and the positive approach became the dominant orientation in academic psychology, which made little differentiation between the metho…
The Social and Psychological Impact of the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks: A Discursive Analysis
The social and psychological effects of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were analyzed via the Hermeneutic-Dialectic mode of inquiry. An informal and spontaneous discussion among four young adult residents of New York City in April of 2002 revealed that while anxiety has lessened since the attacks, a sense of security that existed before September 11 remains lost. Women described more fear for their safety than men, and men expressed more…
Black Identity: Response to Our Reviewers
Black Identity: The O. J. Simpson Case
The purpose of this paper is to review the White and Black perspectives regarding the O. J. Simpson trial. The henneneutic-dialectic (HD) method of inquiry will be utilized in order to comprehend how Whites and Blacks reached their respective conclusions concerning O. J. Simpson’s guilt or innocence. This method of inquiry employs discourses, separately by Blacks and Whites, the interchange of the recorded discourses, and last, the coming togethe…
An Art-Historical View of Social Disintegration
One hundred and one Fine Arts college students judged seventeen Western Master paintings of small groups spanning six centuries, using a semanticdifferential scale. It was hypothesized that the paintings would porlray a decreased sense of social cohesiveness, reflecting Riesman’s (1950) characterization of social changes from inner-directed to other-directedness. A factor analysis revealed that one of the two factors extracted, group solidarity, …
Freedom of Movement Among Blue Collar Workers
Freedom of Movement (FM) is seen in this study as the discrepancy between aspiration and personal achievement. Five hundred and sixty-three blue collar workers responded to a mail questionnaire specifically designed to assess FM Sex, race, and income related monotonically to FM, with Blacks, women, and low income workers showing low FM. Age also related significantly to FM, but in a curvilinear fashion, with mid-age workers having the lowest FM. …

Dimensions of Alienation Among Manual and Non-Manual Workers
The pervasive use of the alienation framework in interpretative sociological works has generated a need for empirical studies of alienation itself. Empirical measures of powerlessness and normlessness are developed for political and economic areas, following the leads provided by Seeman's conceptual analysis. The alienation scales developed in the present study are combined with Srole's anomie scale and Seeman's status-orientation scale for facto…
