War and Famine Around the Indian Ocean During the Second World War
This paper attempts to understand how the interaction of natural disasters and human behaviour during wartime led to famines in three regions under imperial control around the Indian Ocean. The socio-economic structure of these regions had been increasingly differentiated over the period of imperial rule, with large proportions of their populations relying on agricultural labour for their subsistence. Before the war, food crises in each of the re…
Community Driven Development and Structural Disadvantage
Community-driven development (CDD) programmes have emerged on a large scale in the Global South following research and policy work regarding social capital, capabilities and empowerment. This paper analyses one of the largest international examples of the ‘social’ turn, examining the effects of the CDD approach in governmental, structural and relational terms. While the CDD approach successfully generated new political rationalities and governmen…
Elite Capture and Corruption in two Villages in Bengkulu Province, Sumatra

Land Disputes in Indonesia
In March 1991 a student from a Yogyakarta activist women's group visited the Inter Universities Center office, to ask for a donation for her organization. Her group was one of nine sponsors of a calendar called Land for the People (Tanah untuk Rakyat). The calendar attracted considerable comment after she had left, as those in the office at the time crowded around, trying to guess which national political figures were being satirized there--not a…

I Am a Leaf in the Storm
Most literature on the attempted Coup of September 30, 1965 in Indonesia has concentrated on analyzing events and theories about what happened in Jakarta,1 as well as discussing the political aftermath of the Coup, especially the killings.2 More recently historians have turned their attention to the problem of the massacres, and the lack of an explanation in the writing of Indonesian history since 1965, for why the killings occurred. Because of i…

Pronouns Without Explicit Antecedents?
Yule (1982) has argued that examples from speech show that pronouns may be interpreted nonreferentially. In the present paper, it is argued that pronouns elicit procedures for the identification of referents which are in explicit focus (Sanford and Garrod, 1981). Three experiments are offered in support of this view. The discussion centres on the need for carefully assessing the knowledge-states of listeners when pronouns are used in the absence …
