Symap analyses in archaeology: Intrasite assumptions and a comparison with TREND analysis
Computer‐based descriptive mapping techniques have been uncritically used in archaeological applications with varying degrees of success and acceptance. The TREND procedure, for example, has been widely advocated, while the SYMAP procedure is still little recognized. This paper shows that the SYMAP algorithm has underlying premises which are more consistent with general archaeological assumptions regarding the intrasite deposition of cultural mat…
Archaeology and Science: Surviving the Preparadigmatic Crisis
News and Short Contributions
Trend analysis in archaeology: A preliminary study of Intrasite patterning
The importance of a trend‐surface computer program (TREND1) for spatial organization studies is discussed in reference to the Olduvai Gorge FLK ('Zinj') floor. It is concluded that TREND1 is a potentially powerful descriptive tool that can be routinely applied to data sets prior to inductive statistical tests
