  • Vaudeville et infirmité chez Eugène Labiche

    Open Access•Ignacio Ramos-Gay•ARTICLE•Studi Francesi•2025

This article seeks to explore Eugène Labiche’s signature crafting of class identity through representations of bodily degradation. His vaudevilles display a host of disabled characters – deaf, lame, mute, one-armed, cross-eyed, one-eyed, blind, etc. – and figures stigmatized by signs of aging, illness or decay, such as baldness, toothlessness, tics, or other afflictions. Labiche’s plays present bodily incompleteness as a stark counterpoint to the…

  • French Theatre and Victorian England

    Open Access•Ignacio Ramos-Gay•ARTICLE•Cahiers victoriens et édouardiens•2024

Theatre historian Jean-Claude Yon defines the omnipresence of French theatre in Europe throughout the nineteenth century as an expression of ‘cultural imperialism’ (Yon 8). This assertion is corroborated by the Francophilia of numerous British members of Parliament such as Frederic Harrison and Edward Spencer Beesly, who were accused of ‘Frenchify[ing] the English institutions’ (Bagehot 52, quoted by Varouxakis 109), as well as by writers such as…

  • Female Nudity, Interspecies Sexuality and ‘Horseness’ in Laetitia Dosch’s Hate (2018)

    Open Access•Ignacio Ramos-Gay•ARTICLE•Theatre Research International•2022

The aim of this paper is to analyse Laetitia Dosch's play Hate , first performed in Lausanne in 2018, in light of recent theories on female nudity, interspecies sexuality and non-human animal subjectivity. Featuring a completely naked woman and a white stallion, the show revolves around the possibility of interspecies communication and the need to re-evaluate the meaning of humankind and animality through theatrical performance. I begin by drawin…

    Open Access•Ignacio Ramos-Gay•ARTICLE•Studi Francesi•2022

The aim of this article is to analyse the presence of “animaux savants” in the Parisian théâtre de la foire of the second half of the eighteenth century and their interaction with the female audience. Through the examination of chronicles, reviews and other literary output of the time that depicted or referred to the figure of Turco, the celebrated monkey that was displayed by Jean-Baptiste Nicolet in the Théâtre des Grands Danseurs de Corde duri…

    Open Access•Ignacio Ramos-Gay•ARTICLE•Studi Francesi•2020

The aim of this paper is to explore the influence of Labiche’s, Martin’s and Monnier’s L’Affaire de la rue de Lourcine in French popular culture, from its premiere (26 March 1857) to the First World War. In order to refute the systematic appeal to purely aesthetic criteria when stating the literary quality of the play, I first examine the social impregnation of the characters’ most famous words and expressions in contemporary French vocabulary. I…

    Open Access•Ignacio Ramos Gay, Ignacio Ramos-Gay•ARTICLE•French Studies•2020

    Open Access•Ignacio Ramos-Gay•ARTICLE•Men and Masculinities•2020•References: 23

The purpose of this article is to analyze the masculinity of the biblical figure Moses in relation to the golden calf in Exodus 32. The prophet has been used as a model of biblical masculinity based on criteria such as violence, persuasive ability, his relationship to women, and physical disability. However, no gender construction derived from his interaction with the animal idol has been considered. In the context of the intersection of 'animal …

Open Access•Ignacio Ramos Gay, Ignacio Ramos-Gay•ARTICLE•Estudios Humanísticos.

Ignacio Ramos Gay, Ignacio Ramos-Gay•ARTICLE•Journal of Postcolonial Writing•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Cass Pennant’s autobiography Cass revolves around his days as one of the top men of West Ham’s ill-reputed InterCity Firm (ICF). As a narrative that spans over 40 years, it intertwines Pennant’s personal account with the rise and fall of hooliganism in Britain during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Pennant was born in East London and fostered by a white, working-class family; his narrative is a detailed introspective description of his progress f…

  • He had French immorality on the brain »: Adaptation et censure du théâtre français à Londres (1837-1901)

    Ignacio Ramos Gay, Ignacio Ramos-Gay•ARTICLE•Romantisme•2010
