Strategic analysis views crime as a confrontation and as a mean to an end. It is characterised by : 1) it concentrates on crime; 2) it takes cognizance of the circumstances under which the crime is committed; 3) it presents the crime as a decision influenced by its anticipated results. Felson's routine activity approach, which is similar to strategic analysis, is presented in this article. Other recent developments in criminology have made it pos…
Sentencing research has generally neglected taking into account how perceptions of the severity of available sanctions affect sentencing behavior. Based on the magnitude estimates of just how severe penalties of different kinds and different amounts criminal courts perceive them to be, this paper identifies the current exchange rates on what Wilkins has called the “punishment market” explains why so many alternatives to imprisonment experiments h…
Conjugal homicide is a situation where one person murders another person with whom he or she is involved through a matrimonial, quasi-matrimonial or other romantic relationship, the study of this type of homicide is based on the entirety of conjugal murders known to police (77) and committed in different municipalities on the island of Montreal during two time periods, namely 1954 to 1962 and 1985 to 1989. The great majority of these crimes are c…
This article deals with four themes on private security. First, private security is defined as a protection supplied to organizations targeting the specific needs of any given organization. Second, the expansion of private security is seen as resulting from the convergence between a real demand for security and a superior supply than the one offered by the police. Third, the article deals with questions regarding private security involving privat…
L’effet structurant du contrôle social
The paper deals with the following question. To what extent do the human efforts at controlling crime succeed ? It starts by proposing an enlarged concept of social control. In the second part, a theory of choices made by offenders under the constraint of social control is put forward. In the last part, it is argued that social control can have four types of impacts : I — reducing the frequency of crime; 2 — reducing its severity; 3 — rendering o…
Les zones urbaines criminelles
The study of criminal areas has been a longstanding tradition in sociology and criminology. It had its hour of glory during the publication of the works of Shaw and McKay of the University of Chicago. In this article — which is an account of the studies on the concentration of criminals in urban areas — we show that, since the XIXth century, large metropolises have relatively stable sectors where the social control is weak and opportunities to co…

Jockeys and Joyriders Changing Patterns in Car Theft Opportunity Structures
In this paper yearly variations in the rates of recovered stolen vehicles are viewed as measuring changes in levels ofjoyriding and short-term transportation offences. Rates of unrecovered stolen vehicles are shown to reflect instead variations in levels of chopping, retagging, and other fencing activities. We analyse one specific setting (the province of Quebec, Canada) where the amateur demand for stolen vehicles decreased substantially while t…

Severity of Sanctions
Most of the research on sentencing in the last two decades has been on disparity within single national contexts. No international comparisons on punitiveness and disparity have been achieved. Instead of comparing official statistics of different countries, this research is based on a questionnaire that was filled out by Canadian and French court practitioners (i.e., judges, prosecutors, and defense lawyers). The results indicate that there are n…
