A Vietnamese literary riddle from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries
This article considers the literary curiosity from the Mạc–Lê dynastic wars in the sixteenth century of a poem written by a Mạc-dynasty partisan being interpreted by later generations as having been written to praise the Lê dynasty. It uses textual and contextual analysis to argue that the poem was written to praise the Mạc dynasty but was later revised by scholars of the Lê dynasty
What Lies Behind the Earliest Story of Buddhism in Ancient Vietnam
The Vietnamese story about the arrival of Buddhism and the building of the first Buddhist temples in what is now northern Vietnam contains no distinctively Buddhist content, but rather is a tale of thaumaturgy, the worship of trees and of rocks, and rainmaking. This essay analyzes the textual history of the story, which is dated in the early third century CE. It examines the names of the two major protagonists of the story and, although the names…

A History of the Vietnamese
The history of Vietnam prior to the nineteenth century is rarely examined in any detail. In this groundbreaking work, K. W. Taylor takes up this challenge, addressing a wide array of topics from the earliest times to the present day - including language, literature, religion, and warfare - and themes - including Sino-Vietnamese relations, the interactions of the peoples of different regions within the country, and the various forms of government …
On Being Muonged
This paper argues that use of the term Muong to designate an ethnic minority in Vietnam began in the early twentieth century as a product of French colonial efforts to apply modern social scientific description to form knowledge of upland peoples adjacent to and linguistically related to Vietnamese speakers in the lowlands. Subsequently, Vietnamese speakers adopted this usage to designate a national minority. A local text from the turn of the cen…
Surface Orientations in Vietnam
If we can clear our minds of "Vietnameseness" as the object of our knowledge and instead look carefully at what the peoples we call Vietnamese were doing at particular times and places, then we begin to see that beneath the veneers of shared fields of sounds and marks, or of however one may refer to mutually intelligible languages and writings, lay quite different kinds of peoples whose views of themselves and of others was significantly grounded…
Profitability crisis and the erosion of popular prosperity
The recession that began in Canada and the United States in 1990 and eventually engulfed most of the developed capitalist world was notable in three major respects: it produced one of the most severe international economic contractions since the Second World War; it brought an end to one of the most long-lasting - if peculiar - economic expansions in the history of world capitalism; and, unlike previous recessions of the past twenty five years, i…
Essays into Vietnamese Pasts
Essays that demonstrate ways to "read" the pasts of Vietnam through detailed analyses of its art, chronicles, legends, documents, and monuments. The book's many voices undermine the idea of a single Vietnamese past. All the essays, while varied, are connected by their common concerns with language and text
The Literati Revival in Seventeenth-century Vietnam
Modern Vietnamese history is generally considered to begin with the seventeenth century. The final destruction of the Cham kingdom and the concurrent territorial expansion presided over by the Nguyễn lords of Hue increased the visibility of the Vietnamese people along the South China Sea and attracted the attention of refugees, merchants, and missionaries from China, Japan, and Europe. These foreign contacts were symptomatic of basic changes occu…

The “Twelve Lords” in Tenth-Century Vietnam
Our chief sources of information about Vietnam until the middle of the tenth century are the dynastic histories and related writings of China. This is because, from the beginning of recorded history in Vietnam until then, Vietnam was, for the most part, under the authority of Chinese governors or people who posed as Chinese-style governors. By the end of the tenth century, an independent Vietnamese monarchy was established, and historical informa…
