Social Geographical Patterns in Membership of the Established Church in Denmark
The Church of Denmark was established in 1849 and is regarded as a pillar of traditional national identity. This status is being challenged by a steady decline in membership in recent decades. The Capital area is especially prone to low membership rates, and this regional pattern remains when the analysis controls for income and education. Furthermore, the local membership rate is also related to affiliation to the neighbourhood. Our detailed ana…
The Emergence of Post-dogmatic Religion
Historically, religion in Western Europe has tended to be defined by churches which distinguish themselves doctrinally. Therefore, religion is commonly thought of in doctrinal, cognitive terms. However, since the Second World War ended by affirming democracy and human rights, the pedagogical system has been subject to a silent revolution, and consequently, religion has been subject to a subtle change. New generations have been taught to question …
Research Note: Performing Bach's Passion Music in a Late Modern Context
The performance of Bach's Passion of St. Matthew in the Cathedral of Kristiansand (Norway) in 2010 is examined here as a characteristic cultural encounter with sacred symbols in a late modern context. The present study attempts to illuminate how modern participants reflect on the sacred origin of the work and its emotive appeal. The study is interdisciplinary, combining musicology and sociology of religion. Our methodological approach comprises o…
Annual Review of the Sociology of Religion. Volume 3 (2012): New Methods in the Sociology of Religion
This volume points to methodological innovations in social research and their potential for social scientific studies of religion. Computerization has opened for both quantitative and qualitative systematic analyses of complex materials, and the epistemological discourse after Positivism has opened for reconsidering the foundation of empirical social research. Furthermore religion is changing, and sociology of religion therefore widens its scope …
Rejection Of Religious Pluralism – The Danish Case
A Sociology of Religious Emotion
This book aims to change the way we think about religion by putting emotion back onto the agenda. It challenges a tendency to over-emphasise rational aspects of religion, and rehabilitates its embodied, visceral, and affective dimensions. Against the view that religious emotion is a purely private matter, it offers a new framework which shows how religious emotions arise in the varied interactions between human agents and religious communities, h…

Implicit religion som sociologisk fænomen
Ole Riis: Implicit religion as a sociological phenomenon The article focuses on ‘implicit’ religion, which is a term employed for forms of manifestation that are not part of the official, institutionalized definition of religiosity. The article has two purposes. The first is to delimit the sphere of themes in implicit religion and structure a sociological approach to it. The second is to explore the fruitfulness of this approach for sociology. Th…
Religion in Secularizing Society: The Europeans’ Religion at the End of the 20th Century
The cross-national analyses of Europe’s patterns of religious and moral orientations presented in this book are all based on the 1990 European Values Study survey data and some use both 1981 and 1990 data. Use is also made of more recent data gathered in 1995/1997 within the framework of the World Values Study, directed by Ron Inglehart, as well as data from a recent pilot survey in Japan. The contributions in this book are not written within a c…

Religion Re-Emerging: The Role of Religion in Legitimating Integration and Power in Modern Societies
Religion has re-emerged on the worldwide political arena. This should not be written off as a temporary reaction against a necessary process of modernization. An advanced industrial society does not require religion to be separated from politics. The borderline between religion and politics is fluid and constantly contested. Even absolutist regimes in modern societies have sought legitimacy through religion. Today, religion mainly re-emerges voic…

Recent Developments in The Study of Religion in Modern Society

Religionens rolle i naturvidenskabens legitimering
The great sociologist, R.K. Merton, presented in 1938 a study concerning the establishment of science in 17th century England. In this study, he pointed out the importance of Puritanism in the legitimation of natural science. The present essay argues that the establishment of empirical science was an international trend which therefore ought to be seen in an international perspective. Many international and English intellectual sources can be tra…
The Role of Religion in Legitimating the Modern Structuration of Society 1
Religion is generally regarded as an issue of minor importance in the sociological study of the modern Nordic countries. But this position is based on a narrow, church-oriented concept of religion. An anthropologist could find many religious aspects in modern Nordic countnes, which run parallel to religious phenomena in other societies. If religion is understood in a wider sense, it emerges as an important clue to the sociological understanding o…

Om samfundsreligionen
The concept of civil religion was coined by Rousseau and revived by Bellah in order to identify the basis of religious legitimization in a voluntaristic society. In the Danish context, the status of the Lutheran “folk-church” becomes central in a debate concerning the Danish civil religion. But whereas the state supports the Lutheran folk-church and vice versa, the folk-church should not be identified with the civil religion. There is, however, a…
Local Voting Studies of Total Electorates: The Danish General Election of 1971
On the basis of voting data on total electorates in three polling districts, the main intentions of this article have been: first to describe the voting change patterns in the three districts and second to put forward supported hypotheses for a later, more rigorous testing on a representative sample of voters in the entire political system. Among these hypotheses we may mention: 1) the attitude on an important issue in an election campaign ‐ in t…
