  • Laura Kalman. Right Star Rising: A New Politics, 1974-1980

    Robert M Collins•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2012

The decade of the 1970s has been relatively neglected by scholars, a historical interlude overshadowed by both the leftist tumult of the 1960s and the rightward turn of the 1980s. Yet, as this illuminating political history of the years from 1974 through 1980 shows, the pivot from leftward to rightward movement was not without its own inherent significance, complexity, drama, and interest. Laura Kalman provides a political history of the transiti…

    Robert M Collins•ARTICLE•African and Asian Studies•2006•Cited by: 10

This chapter describes the African slave trade to Asia across the Sahara Desert. The only criteria for the Muslim was that the slave be pagan, and since African traditional religions were unacceptable, sub-Saharan Africa became the most important source of slaves for the Muslim merchants who established elaborate commercial networks to transport them out of Africa across the Sahara, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The Red Sea slave trade was ir…

  • More: The Politics of Economic Growth in Postwar America

    Robert M Collins•BOOK•More•2000

James Carville famously reminded Bill Clinton throughout 1992 that “rit’s the economy, stupid.” Yet, for the last forty years, historians of modern America have ignored the economy to focus on cultural, social, and political themes, from the birth of modern feminism to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Now a scholar has stepped forward to place the economy back in its rightful place, at the center of his historical narrative. In More, Robert M. Collin…

  • The Originality Trap: Richard Hofstadter on Populism

    Robert M Collins•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•1989•Cited by: 3

Richard Hofstadter was among the preeminent historians of his generation, one of that small band who function triumphantly as both academics and intellectuals. His work was characterized by breathtaking conceptual innovations and a luminous prose style; his former students Stanley Elkins and Eric McKitrick have written perceptively of his genius for making all look so easy and exhibiting things as though they ought to have looked that way all alo…

During the first decade of the Anglo-Egyptian occupation of the Sudan, the newly formed Condominium Government had slowly established its rule in the Southern Sudan.
