  • Popper, Karl (1902–1994)

    Open Access•Lars Udehn•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2017

Karl Raimund Popper was born in Vienna in 1902. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1937 and moved to London in 1946, where he became affiliated to the London School of Economics. Popper was knighted in 1965 and died in 1994. He is generally recognized as one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century. His interests ranged from physics to sociology, from pre‐Socratic philosophy to quantum theory and from politics to music. His most …

  • Analytical Sociology and Theories of the Middle Range

Lars Udehn, Peter Bearman et al.•CHAPTER•The Oxford handbook of analytical…•2011•Citada por: 28

This article locates analytic sociology in the Mertonian tradition of middle-range theory, which focuses on partial explanation of phenomena observed in different social domains through identification of core causal mechanisms. Robert K. Merton was one of the most important figures in twentieth-century sociology. He wrote on a wide range of topics, including bureaucracy, deviance, mass communications, professions, social stratification, and the s…

  • Max Weber und Rational Choice by Zenonas Norkus (review)

    Lars Udehn•ARTICLE•Max Weber Studies•2005

Book Reviews 155 seem to have read its literature very widely. From an Anglophone perspective, this is very refreshing; so many red herrings and cul-de-sacs simply left unpursued and unexplored. The theme is however the same, whatever the language—selective translations of varying quality in combination with disciplinary developments, together with the efforts of system-builders seeking legitimation, have contrived to hide from us Weber's origina…

  • Methodological Individualism

    Lars Udehn•BOOK•Methodological Individualism•2002

Throughout the history of social thought, there has been a constant battle over the true nature of society, and the best way to understand and explain it. This volume covers the development of methodological individualism, including the individualist theory of society from Greek antiquity to modern social science. It is a comprehensive and systematic treatment of methodological individualism in all its manifestations

  • The Changing Face of Methodological Individualism

    Lars Udehn•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•2002•Citada por: 82•Referencias: 38

It is common to categorize social scientific theories as either individualistic or holistic, and to assume that they are opposites. This neat picture is not so much wrong as too simple. There are different versions of both doctrines, and some versions combine elements from both. In this article I distinguish a number of versions of methodological individualism that differ significantly in strength. The main divide is between strong versions of me…

  • Popper's Situational Analysis and Contemporary Sociology

Open Access•Peter Hedström, Richard Swedberg et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy of the Social Sciences•1998•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 17

This article assesses the value of Karl Popper's situational analysis for contem porary sociology We maintain that this element of Popper's social science methodology has been largely neglected by sociologists and suggest that this is because it is borrowed from economics. As such, situational analysis has much in common with recent attempts to introduce rational choice in sociology. Our main question is this: What is the contribution of situatio…

  • Twenty-five Years with The Logic of Collective Action

    Open Access•Lars Udehn•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1993•Citada por: 31•Referencias: 81

A quarter of a century has passed since Mancur Olson wrote The Logic of Collective Action (1965). In this seminal work, Olson argued that collective action will not take place if individuals are rational egoists and the group is large. This is a review article summing up 25 years of continuing debate about the validity of this argument Surprisingly little has been added that goes beyond Olson's informal analysis. His formal analysis has proved le…

  • The Conflict between Methodology and Rationalization in the Work of Max Weber

    Open Access•Lars Udehn•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1981•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 27

Max Weber is the leading representative of an interpretive sociology aiming at an explanation in terms of the motives of the acting individuals. He is also the proponent of the thesis that the Western world is moving in the direction of increasing rationalization, held by many to be the uniting theme of his work. It is the thesis of this paper that there is a conflict between these two themes in Weber's work. The process of rationalization ends i…
