    Open Access•Barry V Johnston•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2017

Robert K. Merton is among the last of the pansophic scholars in American sociology. His works have opened or deepened new fields of study in the sociology of science, studies of social time, the development and analysis of social theory, and the exploration of the dynamic relationship between sociological theory and empirical research. To this brief list of intellectual contributions should also be added a highly improbable journey from working‐c…

  • Commentary on some of the Russian writings of Pitirim A. Sorokin

Open Access•Barry V Johnston, Natalia Y Mandelbaum et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•1994

The roots of Sorokin's sociology are found in his Russian works. Barriers of language and politics however, have prohibited their study by many social scientists and historians. This article is the most systematic effort to compile, translate, and annotate the catalogue of Sorokin's scholarly writings from 1910 to 1922. The recent changes that made this bibliography possible have stimulated a resurgence of Russian respect and interest in Sorokin,…

  • Pitirim Sorokin and the American sociological association: The politics of a professional society

    Open Access•Barry V Johnston•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•1987

Pitirim Sorokin is known as both a pioneer and outcast in the history of American sociology. A Russian emigré with a bruising and combative intellectual style, he was increasingly treated as a pariah by the sociological community. Yet in 1963 he won the presidency of the American Sociological Association by a landslide. Otis Dudley Duncan and the Committee of Eight implemented on his behalf the first successful write-in campaign in the history of…

  • Sorokin and Parsons at Harvard: Institutional conflict and the origin of a hegemonic tradition

Open Access•Barry V Johnston, Barry Johnston•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•1986

The early history of Harvard sociology is closely entwined with the careers and personalities of Pitirim Sorokin and Talcott Parsons. The processes and conditions that led to Parsons's rise and Sorokin's decline are essential to understanding the development of Harvard sociology. Edward Tiryakian's work on theory schools and hegemonic traditions in the social sciences is a useful framework for analyzing and discussing these developments. Followin…
