Transformative agency as social construction
A core problem of social constructivist theories of knowledge is the lack of theoretical clarity about the role of knowledge constraints and how they are overcome in practice, by what type of social agency. Knowledge constraints are both special - rules constituting and/or regulating such distinct intellectual fields as science, art and technology - and general - laws working across the nature/culture divide. In order to sort out this complexity …
Biography and Turning Points in Europe and America
This sociological collection advances the argument that the concept of a turning point expands our understanding of life experiences from a descriptive to a deeper and more abstract level of analysis.
Den moralske forfatning. Højreekstremisme og fremmedhad i det genforenede Tyskland
The Moral Constitution. Right-wing extremism and xenophobia in reunited Germany. Most theories about right-wing extremism tend to focus upon either the perpetrators and their social background or, alternatively, the public debate on immigration policies. This article focus upon a third, relatively neglected dimension, the moral constitution of society or the presence of a civic ethos that can keep right-wing extremism under control. This control-…

Kritik, tilpasning, autenticitet og kommunikation - kreativitetsregimer i moderniteten
Feiwel Kupferberg: Criticism, adaptation, authenticity and communication. Creativity regimes in modernity Creativity is not, as psychologists tend to think, the result of some underlying personal quality, that is independent of the institutionalised or professional context in which it is articulated. It is a social construction, and how we see it depends on the type of life world or social field we tend to identify with or construct our meanings …
The Rise and Fall of the German Democratic Republic
Most of the public debate on reunited Germany has tended to focus on economic issues such as the collapse of East German industry, mass unemployment, career difficulties, and differences in wages and living standards. However, the author of this text argues that the main problem is not persisting economic differences but the internal cultural divide between East and West Germans, which is based upon different moral values in the two Germanies. He…

Entreprenörskap som existentiell handling
Entrepreneurship as existential actIn this paper I argue that business economics tends to present an overrationalized view of entrepreneurial action. Entrepreneurship is basically an existential type of action, as it includes elements of tradition-breaking activities and emotions related to coping with uncertainty. These existential aspects are best revealed as one studies aspects of entrepreneurship that have been marginalized in entrepreneurial…
The Break-up of Communism in East Germany and Eastern Europe
This book presents a novel understanding of the break-up of communist hegemony in East Germany and Eastern Europe. Based on comparative case studies, it argues that identity politics is a particular i
Models of creativity abroad
Migration, the role of the stranger and travelling are all creativity-enhancing although for different reasons. The migrant model verifies Koestler's hypothesis that new ideas often arise out of combinations of separate frames of thinking. Simmel's theory of the stranger emphasizes the increased objectivity of limited commitments. Rudwick's recently suggested model of liminal experience might help us explain why the seemingly purposeless activity…
Transformation as Biographical Experience. Personal Destinies of East Berlin Graduates before and after Unification
The transformation of East German society can be seen as a contingent turning point in the life planning of individuals. It destabilized professional careers and forced individuals to make unexpected choices under conditions of great uncertainty and risk, for which their biographical experiences had not prepared them. Adaptation to the new social environment was relatively successful, but was only accomplished at considerable personal cost and/or…
The land of the murderers. Jewish survivors in post‐war Germany
This article can be seen as a journey of self‐discovery. It describes and tries to analyse how the emotions and prejudices of a Scandinavian citizen of Jewish orgins toward post‐war Germany evolved during and after a cultural encounter with the land of the murderers. Its main thesis is that we should listen to how the new Germany is seen by those Jews who have decided to make Germany their home, as this might help us see some aspects of present‐d…
The Reality of Teaching
There is a strange dissonance between on the one hand the rather disordered and unstructured everyday reality of teaching as noted in literature on teachers’ knowledge and on the other hand the tendency among leading social theorists, such as Bourdieu and Giddens to emphasise the ordered and structured nature of education and social life in general. Among the possible reasons for the lack of awareness of and sensitivity to the reality of teaching…

Strategic Learning
East Germany is an interesting area of study for transformation theory and sociological theory generally because of the predominant role of 'national integration' in this particular process of transformation and the element of 'strategic learning' among the major players guiding large-scale transformation processes. The major mistake made in the German case has been the assumption that nationalism and national identity are the integrating forces …
Biografisk självgestaltning
The biologiscal continuation of selfIn this article I argue that although individual changes or ”biographies” are crucial for the dynamics and functioning of modem societies, sociological theorizing has tended to downplay the importance of the biographical constitution of self. Methodologically sociologists have relied too much upon explanatory ” types” rather then starting from the social fact of ”variation”, the chaotic nature of the actual fun…
Livsvärldar och systemtransformation
Lifeworlds and SystemtransformationsHow are we to understand and explain the ongoing processes of transformation in Eastern Europe? The main thesis of this article is that the difficulties of the social sciences to predict both the collapse of the previous system and the difficulties in transforming them to systems of the Western type, is due to an underestimation of the strength and independence of the life-world dimension of the social order. T…
