  • Criminalizing Pregnancy Loss

Open Access•Kendra Hutchens, Wendy A Bach et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2026

A rich literature explores connections between the criminal-legal and health care systems, yet little is known about how law enforcement gathers information in medical settings or how these practices shape criminal-legal outcomes for patients. We address these gaps through a thematic analysis of criminal court files from 31 cases involving pregnancy loss from 2022 to 2024. Our analysis identifies three overlapping, informal “gates” through which …

    Open Access•Kendra Hutchens•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2023•References: 52

    Lori M Hunter, Joan Castro et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Men and women's vulnerability to disasters is different and often related, in part, to cultural norms that influence gendered behaviors and abilities. In this study we focus on gender differences in swimming abilities, which, in the case of tsunamis have resulted in far greater female mortality rates. We present results on swimming ability by gender for 940 residents of coastal rural communities in the northern and central Philippines. We also ex…
