Wähler als Wandervögel: Dealignment and the German Voter
The 2002 Bundestag elections demonstrate the emerging new styleof German electoral politics. Where once party competition wasbuilt upon a stable base of Stammwähler, the catchword for 2002 wasthe Wechselwähler-the changing voter. The traditional bonds to socialgroups, such as class and religion, have steadily eroded across Bundestagelections in the late twentieth century, and these bonds had adiminished impact in 2002. Similarly, this chapter wil…
Public Opinion and Direct Democracy
Over the past quarter-century, tensions have grown in most Western nations between the existing processes of representative democracy and calls by reformists for a more participatory style of democratic government. Voter turnout is down, as is public trust in parties and representative institutions generally. These signs point to growing public dissatisfaction with the current system of representative democracy. 1

Why study political cycles: An introduction
Throughout the history of social science, cyclical theories have had an intrinsic fascination for the explanation of social change. Confronted with the manyfold deviations and fluctuations of social development which could not be explained by linear‐evolutionary, let alone equilibrium theory, cyclical concepts claim to improve theory building. These concepts are based on the assumption that empirical deviations from a trend should not be handled …
Governing left parties frustrating the radical non-established Left: The rise and inevitable decline of the Greens
This article discusses the causes of the rise and disproportionate success of the Green Party in West Germany. Contrary to social structural explanations which perceive the Greens as a party of the new, post-industrial type, it is argued that the emergence of the Greens is a result of economic development and of a change in the ideological and the interest-specific political representation of established parties, especially the SPD. By analysis o…
The German Greens: The Post-Industrial Non-Established and the Party System
This article focuses on the process of partisan realignment in the West German party system of the 1980s by analyzing electoral support for the new party, the Greens. On the basis of quantitative analyses of 1980 and 1983 electoral data, a spatial analysis of the German party system was conducted. This analysis reveals the existence of two distinct dimensions of political conflict, one dividing established oppositions and the corresponding partie…
The Split Between the Established and the Non‐established Left in Germany
The focus is on the problem of dimensionality of left–right evaluations in mass publics. Starting from findings of earlier research showing that the left–right dichotomy can be interpreted in terms of a partisan and a value/issue component, it is argued here that the latter component has to be further differentiated into a more general value preference and a pro‐/anti‐establishment component. A subsidiary hypothesis maintains that the establishme…
