  • The Multiethnic Network of the Lower Orinoco in Early Colonial Times

Heinz Heinen, H Dieter Heinen et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnohistory•2000•Cited by: 5•References: 12

Current Amerindian societies in the Venezuelan lowlands do not reflect the complex interethnic organization that once prevailed on the lower Orinoco. That organization was based on a sophisticated subsistence specialization such as the exchange of horticultural products for fish and game. This article analyzes the demographic characteristics and social organization of the area and attempts to disentangle the intricate network of Waraoan and non-W…

    Mark K Taylor, Mario Bunge et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1985•Cited by: 3•References: 11

Using the hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur, it is possible to discern symbolic dimensions in cultural anthropology. Symbols, here, are dominant images in anthropologists' texts, creatively posited by inquirers, that, most importantly, possess a surplus of meaning. A symbol's fullest surplus of meaning is a prereflexive and comprehensive "understanding" (Verstehen) that may encompass a scholar's attempts at "explanation" (Erklaren). Examples o…

  • A Based Report on Practicing Anthropology in Venezuela

    Heinz Heinen, H Dieter Heinen•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1980

The situation in Venezuela — for anthropologists in general and practicing anthropologists in particular — is characterized by two sets of circumstances that make it significantly different from the one prevailing in the United States and in Europe. First, there is an extremely broadbased population pyramid with the consequence that there is a great demand for all types of public services. By the same token, there is no lack of jobs in the social…

  • Policy Studies and Anthropology [and Comments and Reply]

    Glynn Cochrane, Dan R Aronson et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1980•Cited by: 10•References: 7

An increasing number of anthropologists are involved in policy studies, studies which aim to change or to affect decision making with respect to important public issues. Characteristics of these studies are highlighted in contrast to traditional research assumptions given in the anthropological literature. It is the author's contention that research using traditional anthropological methods and techniques must be changed to accommodate policy stu…

  • The Survival of Communities

Iain Prattis, Claude Ake et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1979•Cited by: 3•References: 5

The theoretical concern of this essay is with economic structures that are considered to be causally prior to the perpetuation of underdevelopment. Industrial capitalism as a mode of production is briefly discussed to identify specific properties and processes that produce inequalities. The political economy of government intervention and of world commodity markets places regional policy within a realistic context in that government intervention …

  • Environmental Orientations

Erik Cohen, David F Aberle et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1976•Cited by: 14

A new approach to social ecology is offered which attempts to integrate a variety of theories, each of which approaches the problem of man's relationship to his environment from a different perspective. It is postulated that man refers to the environment to achieve not one, but a multiplicity of purposes. To each purpose corresponds a type of environmental orientation. Four such orientations are distinguished: the instrumental, the territorial, t…

  • Understanding in Anthropology

    Maria‐barbara Watson‐franke, Maria-Barbara Watson-Franke et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1975•Cited by: 12

The task of anthropology consists in describing and explaining cultures and ultimately reaching an understanding of them through interpretation. The practical difficulties of this are obvious to all those who have dealth with members of another culture. As Malinowski observed, the anthropologist's task is to be "the interpreter of the native." It is suggested that some of the principles elucidated in the philosophical discipline of hermeneutics, …

  • Ecology, Ritual, and Economic Organization in the Distribution of Palm Starch among the Warao of the Orinoco Delta

Heinz Heinen, H Dieter Heinen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•1974•Cited by: 12

Rituals of the Warao Indians of the Orinoco delta of Venezuela that involve the distribution of moriche (Mauritia flexuosa) starch may contribute to the preservation of tribal or subgroup identity, but such rituals also constitute an important survival mechanism by channeling surplus food between subgroups, and by institutionalizing the storage of basic foodstuffs which are thus guarded against capricious consumption. The nahanamu festival, with …
