Relationship initiation and formation in post-match Tinder chat conversations
This article uses conversation analysis to investigate the communicative practices of unacquainted, matched Tinder users in chat conversations, in the process of developing a potential romantic relationship. Drawing on data from 157 Tinder conversations, the analysis explores the occasioning of talk about personal and intimate matters. The analysis shows that the interactional device through which the revelation of personal and intimate informati…

Aesthetics, verisimilitude and user engagement: Reporting Findings Through Fictional Accounts in Qualitative Inquiry
This article explores the use of fiction as a mode of representing data in social research. I show that three of the key drivers for fictionalising research accounts relate to the ambitions of aesthetic engagement, verisimilitude and user engagement. I look at the different ways that authors have attempted to achieve these ambitions and the methodological tensions that arise from them. I show that contemporary evaluative criteria in qualitative i…
Introduction: The Senses in Social Interaction
In this introduction, we provide the scholarly background that motivates the special issue and briefly discuss its content. We touch on contemporary debates in symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, and anthropology that inform the research undertaken by the contributors. We conclude by deriving six interrelated themes-intersection, entwinement, multimodal, contextually embedded, structured, and serendipitous-from an…
Sensory communication in YouTube reviews: The interactional construction of products
This study draws on interactionist frameworks of sensorial communication to analyse product reviews on YouTube. Existing studies of YouTube review work have focused on how vloggers manage conflicting neoliberal identity discourses such as ‘authenticity’, ‘being entertaining’ and ‘selling’. I argue that this focus has been at the expense of the communicative work involved in constructing products in reviews, and I suggest that identity issues shou…
Seeing as accountable action: The interactional accomplishment of sensorial work
In this article it is argued that the growing field of the sociology of the senses has had a strong methodological focus on people's accounts of their sensorial experiences at the expense of studying the practical achievement of sense work as an interactional phenomenon. Recent work has called for more innovative methods in sensorial scholarship and the use of creative approaches to explore the senses. While applauding this move, in this article …

This article reports on the analysis of an online forum on the UK's National Health Service website where participants debated the provision of homeopathy as publicly funded medical treatment. Using membership categorisation analysis, the article looks at how members negotiated a category distinction between homeopathy and 'orthodox Western medicine', focusing on the discursive resources that the participants drew on to position each other and th…

Objective Measures and Subjective Reports: Examining Optometric Practice
The paper discusses how visual research methods that draw on ethnomethodology and conversation analysis can help sociologists to reveal how optometrists’ assess the clarity of their clients’ distance vision. It argues that the detailed analysis of video-recorded interactions in optometric consultation rooms can help reveal the practical organization of the ‘routine’ work through which optometrists examine and assess their clients’ sight. Save for…
Institutions, Interaction and Social Theory
From hospitals and prisons to schools and corporations: no matter how large or seemingly abstract, all institutions are ultimately the result of the actions and interactions of people. In this original and innovative text, Gibson and Vom Lehn show the different ways in which studying people’s own meaning-making practices can help us understand the role of institutions in contemporary society. Institutions, Interaction and Social Theory takes the …

Analytic Affordance: Transcripts as Conventionalised Systems in Discourse Studies
This article explores the role of transcripts in the analysis of social action. Drawing on a study of the interactional processes in optometry consultations, we show how our interest in the rhythm of reading letters from a chart arose serendipitously from our orientation to transcription conventions. We discuss our development of alternative transcription systems, and the affordances of each. We relate this example to constructivist debates in th…
Prevalence of Problematic Mobile Phone Use in British Adolescents
The problematic use of mobile phones among adolescents has not been widely studied. There are very few instruments for assessing potential technological addiction to mobile phones, or for categorizing different types of users or uses. The most widely used scale is the Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale (MPPUS), which is used to study adult populations, and has been applied in various forms in international contexts. The aims of this study were to ada…
The Problem With “Problems”: The Case of Openings in Optometry Consultations
This article contributes to conversation analytic understanding of openings in health-care consultations. It focuses on the case of optometry: a form of health-care practice in which an optometrist conducts checks of a patient's vision and eye health. Patients are advised to attend regularly for routine assessments and can also request a specific appointment at any time. Analysis of a corpus of 66 consultations shows what happens when the optomet…
Engendering Response: Professional Gesture and the Assessment of Eyesight in Optometry Consultations
Many of the procedures undertaken within healthcare require specialized forms of participation that may be unfamiliar, even disturbing, to patients or clients. The practitioner has to encourage and enable participation in the investigation in an appropriate fashion while preserving the structure and integrity of the procedure. In this article, we consider optometry and the deployment of a vision test, known as subject refraction, that provides da…
Assessing Distance Vision as Interactional Achievment
Soziale Welt is one of the important journals within German sociology and is even read in foreign countries. It includes empirical and theoretical contributions from all areas of the subject and tries to portray the development of sociology and to give a new impetus. In addition to the quarterly published issues, there are special issues with a unified theme. The journal "Soziale Welt" is aimed at sociologists, social scientists, and at generally…
Re‐constituting social praxis: An ethnomethodological analysis of video data in optometry consultations
Drawing on an ethnomethodological study of work practices in optometry, this paper provides an illustration of the processes involved in the analysis of video recordings of naturalistic data. The analytic perspective outlined here involves attempting to reconstruct the sense‐making resources that are used by participants in real‐world settings to constitute the environments they operate within. In this paper, we present a preliminary examination …

Material Culture and Embodied Action: Sociological Notes on the Examination of Musical Instruments in Jazz Improvisation
This paper argues that the examination of technologies and their social contexts, which form the basis of the material culture perspective, can be strengthened through an increased awareness of the intersubjective and embodied features of social action. With reference to the ways in which jazz musicians improvise with instruments through embodied praxological skills ( Sudnow, 1978 ) and intersubjective art world knowledge ( Becker, 1982 ), the pa…

Negotiating textual talk: Conversation analysis, pedagogy and the organisation of online asynchronous discourse
This paper uses Conversation Analysis to investigate the ways in which participants in an online asynchronous postgraduate reading group managed and negotiated their contributions within the discussion. Using the conversation analytic concerns with sequential organisation, adjacency pairs and topicality, this article shows the analytic insights that this perspective can bring to the examination of written asynchronous discourse. Topicality and the structure of interactive talk in face‐to‐face seminar discussions: Implications for research in distributed learning media
This article examines the structure of topic movement within face‐to‐face postgraduate university seminar discussion forums through a conversation analytic approach. The analysis of 12 audio recordings of seminars showed that in spite of clear differences in the management style of sessions by seminar leaders there were important consistencies in their normative structure of participation. Previous research has shown that the turn‐taking procedur…
Playing in the field: Participant observation and the investigation of intersubjective knowledge in jazz improvisation
This paper investigates the use of intersubjective knowledge in the production of improvised jazz performance. I describe an approach to participant observation in which recordings of the researcher and research participants improvising musical performances together were used as 'texts' for framing discussions. A key methodological challenge in this investigation involved encouraging informants to provide sufficiently detailed verbal accounts of …

Working with Qualitative Data
"Qualitative Data Analysis provides an introduction to how to develop and apply strategies for the analysis of qualitative data by exploring the ways in which analysis is related to all aspects of research. By situating analysis in the context of the whole research process, this book helps the reader to introduce an analytical component to every stage of doing research: from designing a project, reviewing the literature, through the various stage…
