Dr. John Schulenberg (1957-2023) was a brilliant and internationally recognized developmental scientist. In equal measure, he was an outstanding, dedicated, and generous mentor. Through his scholarship and mentorship, his impact on the fields of adolescent and substance use research will be deep and enduring. The overriding theme of his research was illuminating the importance of adolescence in the life course, which he referred to as "Taking the…

  • Short‐term changes in social role statuses across young adulthood and their relation to heavy drinking in a given month

    Open Access•Anne M Fairlie, Brian H Calhoun et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

Young adulthood is a developmental period during which individuals experience shifts in their social roles in various domains, which coincides with a period of time that is also high risk for lifetime peaks in alcohol use. The current study examined age-related changes in heavy episodic drinking (HED) and high-intensity drinking (HID) and associations with short-term (i.e., monthly) variation in young adults' social roles over a 2.5-year period i…

Cross-sectional data was from the 2017-2020 Monitoring the Future nationally representative study of eighth, tenth, and twelfth-grade students. We coded past 30 day nicotine/tobacco use into four mutually exclusive categories: no use, e-cigarette use only, com…

  • Alcohol use and the Covid-19 pandemic

    Open Access•Megan E Patrick, Yvonne M Terry‐mcelrath et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2022•Citada por: 3

Among U.S. young and middle adults, deviations from expected historical trends in population alcohol use that occurred during the pandemic included decreases in alcohol use prevalence, increases in alcohol use frequency, and increases in the use of alcohol to relax/relieve tension and because of boredom. These shifts were likely due, in part, to drinking while alone and at home-which increased during the pandemic

  • Transitions Catalyst Model

    Jennifer C Duckworth, Isaac C Rhew et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2021

Background: The Transitions Catalyst Model suggests increased drinking during young adulthood is due to the notion that alcohol facilitates friendships and romantic/sexual relationships during a developmental period when these relationships are highly valued. However, little research has tested the utility of this model. We examined (1) whether young adults reported greater drinking and related consequences on months when friendships were more im…

  • Cohort effects on gender differences in alcohol use in the United States

    Open Access•Katherine M Keyes, Jonathan Platt et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2021

Gender differences in binge drinking have converged in recent cohorts, due in part to faster decreases in consumption among boys in adolescence, and faster increases in consumption among women in young to middle adulthood. Changes in education and occupation explain a portion, but not all, of these differences; the present study examines how attitudes about gender, religion and family additionally explain cohort effects in binge drinking by sex. …

  • Exploring How Exposure to Truth and State-Sponsored Anti-Tobacco Media Campaigns Affect Smoking Disparities among Young Adults Using a National Longitudinal Dataset, 2002–2017

Open Access•David C Colston, Yanmei Xie et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

We found no evidence that baseline Truth and state-sponsored ad exposure was associated with first cigarette or daily smoking initiation at follow up, nor did we find any evidence for effect modification by sex, race/ethnicity, or parental education. We hypothesize that anti-tobacco media campaigns might have had a short-term impact on smoking behaviors, though these effects were not sustained long term

  • A Daily-Level Analysis of Moderators of the Association between Alcohol Expectancies and Alcohol Use among College Student Drinkers

    Jason J Ramirez, Isaac C Rhew et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2020

Background: Alcohol expectancies, or the perceived likelihood of experiencing certain effects after consuming alcohol, are associated with college student drinking such that heavier drinkers expect a greater likelihood of positive effects. However, less is known as to whether day-to-day within-person deviations in expectancies are associated with drinking that same day and for whom and when these associations may be strongest. Objectives: The aim…

  • Alcohol use among 10th‐graders

    Open Access•Christopher J Mehus, Megan E Patrick•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2020

INTRODUCTION: Drinking at levels beyond standard binge drinking thresholds poses particularly high risks to youth. Few studies have examined high-intensity drinking (HID; 10+ drinks in a row) in high school students and none have tested whether peer drunkenness and parental knowledge (e.g., about youth's whereabouts) distinguish between binge and high-intensity drinkers. METHODS: We used data from the Monitoring the Future study collected from na…

  • U.S. adolescent alcohol use by race/ethnicity

    Yvonne M Terry‐mcelrath, Megan E Patrick•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2018

Understanding racial/ethnic drinking patterns and service provision preferences is critical for deciding how best to use limited alcohol prevention, intervention, and treatment resources. We used nationally representative data from 150,727 U.S. high school seniors from 2005 to 2016 to examine differences in a range of alcohol use behaviors and the felt need to reduce or stop alcohol use based on detailed racial/ethnic categories, both before and …

Open Access•Bohyun Joy Jang, Joy Bohyun Jang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 63

The impact of substance use on the life course of young adults can be substantial, yet few studies have examined to what extent early adult substance use behaviors are related to the timing of family formation, independent of confounding factors from adolescence. Using panel data from the Monitoring the Future study ( N~20,000), the current study examined the associations between three substance use behaviors (i.e., cigarette use, binge drinking,…
