The psychosocial politics of paternity in the case of male donated gametes
The donor, the father, and the imaginary constitution of the family
Reconceptualizing cultural narratives of mature women's sexuality in the Viagra era
Women get this
Chronic pelvic pain in women is a key site through which explorations of the meanings of female gender and pain might further insights into the broader question of the embodied experience of women in relation to pain. A biocultural approach is used to present an analysis of interviews with 40 New Zealand women in which they reflect on 'how come' they have chronic pelvic pain. Women consistently employ a mechanistic rendition of medical discourse …
The (ir)relevance of genetics
Informing offspring of the nature of their conception when conceived via donated gametes such as donor sperm, is increasingly considered by professionals and policy makers to be desirable for many reasons. The aim of this research is to explore and understand processes within families that either facilitate or hinder the telling of children about their conception. This exploration includes analysing the complexity of sociocultural processes surro…
Chronic Pelvic Pain in Women in New Zealand
This article reports the findings of a population-based study in New Zealand that investigated comparative well-being, comorbidity, and the impact of chronic pelvic pain (CPP) on activities. Chronic pelvic pain was defined as lower abdominal pain that is associated with neither the menstrual cycle nor sexual activity. A postal questionnaire was administered to a random sample resulting in a study group of 1,160. The negative impact of CPP on wome…
Sex for life'? Men's counter-stories on 'erectile dysfunction', male sexuality and ageing
Discourse on male sexuality in mid-to-later life has exploded in recent years (Gullette 1998). Attention to this topic has been spurred by the advent of (highly profitable) sexuopharmaceutical 'solutions' to erectile changes affecting older men. 'Success' stories abound in the media and in medical literature related to the restoration of faulty erections and ailing sex lives through drugs such as Viagra (sildenafil citrate), Uprima (apomorphine) …
Viagra stories
Hard Sell, Soft Sell
Viagra (known generically as sildenafil citrate) was released in New Zealand in 1998. Direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertisements represented Viagra as a panacea for men's sexual difficulties. The Research Medicines Industry Association of New Zealand (2000) claims that the Viagra DTC campaign removed the stigma associated with erectile dysfunction. However, in this paper we analyse participants' views that the advertisements also transform cultural …
The downside of Viagra
While much is known about the efficacy and safety of sexuopharmaceuticals used by men for the treatment of erectile difficulties, there remains a dearth of knowledge on the perspectives and experiences of their sexual partners. In particular, few studies have focused on the possible detrimental effects for women of Viagra use within a heterosexual relationship. In this paper we report on a qualitative study based in New Zealand, which involved in…
Critical Encounters with the Medical Paradigm
Problems women patients experience in the medical encounter for chronic pelvic pain
Women who have used the New Zealand health services for chronic pelvic pain have reported problems with diagnosis, communication with the doctor, lack of information, and inappropriate treatment. Six focus groups were conducted in which women talked about their experiences of using the health services for chronic pelvic pain. A discourse analysis of this material provided a conceptual basis for understanding the key dimensions structuring women's…
