How does music contribute to well-being? Perspectives from homeless young adults with problematic psychoactive substance use
Homeless young adults with problematic psychoactive substance (PS) use face multiple challenges that compromise their well-being. Despite these challenges, few of them access psychosocial services and rather rely on personal resources to promote their own well-being. However, literature has been largely centered on their difficulties, leaving their strengths and capacities unknown. Despite this lack of knowledge, literature suggests that music is…
The importance of music during life challenges
Music contributes to a sense of individual and collective empowerment • Music becomes particularly important during elevated psychological distress • Music is used to voice and denounce injustices, inequalities and stigmatisation Young adults experiencing homelessness and harmful psychoactive substance use experience significant individual and structural challenges. Yet, little is known about how they address these challenges. Music is often used…
Gentrification and mental health inequities
The association between gentrification and general health has been established in the scientific literature. Less is known about the relationship between gentrification and mental health at a population level, and for specific subgroups. This scoping review aimed to document (1) the relationships between gentrification and mental health in the general population, and among specific social groups, and (2) the mechanisms which might explain why gen…

Contexte. A critical scoping review about the impact of music in the lives of young adults who use drugs
The influence of music on the addictive trajectory
Music is increasingly considered to promote the health and well-being of clinical populations treated in hospital and psychiatric settings. Research shows numerous benefits of music on physical and mental health issues by responding to psychological, emotional, social and physical needs. However, while music’s benefits are largely supported among clinical populations, it appears that marginalized populations remain stigmatized through a lasting e…

Patients, caregivers and health‐care professionals’ experience with an interdisciplinary intervention for people with multimorbidity in primary care
BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity challenges the health-care system and requires innovative approaches. In 2015, a 4-month patient-centred interdisciplinary pragmatic intervention was implemented in primary care with the aim of supporting self-management for patients with multimorbidity. OBJECTIVE: To explore the perceptions and experiences of health-care professionals, patients and their caregivers with a 4-month patient-centred interdisciplinary pragm…
Using photovoice to reflect on poverty and address social inequalities among primary care teams
A participatory action research project using photovoice was developed in partnership with an international community organization working to overcome poverty. Twenty-eight healthcare professionals and persons in poverty participated in the study. The project consisted of several discussion sessions, creation of a photo exhibition, and knowledge transfer to the community and healthcare system. Photovoice proved to be a transformative method, gene…

Area deprivation and attachment to a general practitioner through centralized waiting lists
Our findings suggest that there are socio-economic inequities in attachment to a GP through centralized waiting lists. Policy makers should take these findings into consideration to adjust centralized waiting list processes to avoid further exacerbation of health inequities
Comment évaluer les effets des évaluations d’impact sur la santé
Health impact assessments (HIA) allow the potential impact of non-health-related actions (policy, project, program) on health to be analyzed. For example, municipal projects, for urban renewal or urban planning, have an impact on health drivers relating to the created environment, and thus, on public health. In the province of Quebec, the government and affiliated organizations have to comment on potential impacts; they use HIAs to ensure health …
Perceived barriers to healthcare for persons living in poverty in Quebec, Canada
Our research revealed that unhealthy living conditions prevent persons living in poverty from accessing quality healthcare and maintaining good health. Also, the complexity of the healthcare system's organization and functioning has a negative impact on the interactions with healthcare providers. Changes in policy and practice are needed to address those barriers and to achieve greater equity and provide more responsive care for persons living in…
