The Structural Sources of Socioeconomic Inequalities in Health
This article investigates how macro-level structures condition the sources of socioeconomic inequalities in health. Drawing on multiple social science disciplines, the authors develop theoretically grounded propositions about how different types of welfare states, varieties of capitalism, and social structures give rise to cross-national variations in the sources of health inequalities. They consider how these macro-level structures affect the di…
The global governance of pandemics
On 17 March, 2020, exasperated by the unilateral measures of many EU member states to close borders and restrict free movement of essential healthcare goods, the editorial board of the Financial Times asked "whether public health should continue to be a sovereign responsibility." On May 29, President Trump announced that the USA would terminate its relationship with the World Health Organization, citing its subservience to China and mismanagement…
The politics of securing borders and the identities of disease
This article compares the policies adopted by Britain, France and Germany to cope with health threats thought to be posed by entrants and migrants and explains why these governments screened at their borders for tuberculosis but not for human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). In order to understand these outcomes, we must recognise that diseases acquire durable identities, conditioned by collective imaginaries…
As três versões do neo-institucionalismo
The Potential of Historical Institutionalism
Political Science and the Three New Institutionalisms
The 'new institutionalism' is a term that now appears with growing frequency in political science. However, there is considerable confusion about just what the 'new institutionalism' is, how it differs from other approaches, and what sort of promise or problems it displays. The object of this essay is to provide some preliminary answers to these questions by reviewing recent work in a burgeoning literature. Some of the ambiguities surrounding the…
