Café Narcissism
The 1979 Cortland Conference marked a decisive shift in the adventures of Telos by opening up a debate on narcissism that would pave the way for later contests that, in turn, symbolize in the eyes of many, the errant swerve of Marxism and post-Marxist critical theory. In what follows we examine the vibrant theoretical community at Cortland during the late-70s and early 80s, revisit the conference itself, and reflect on the narcissism concept and …
The Cult of Exchange Value and the Critical Theory of Spectacle
The concept of ‘spectacle’ entered the vocabulary of the social sciences with the publication of Debord’s classic Society of the Spectacle. Debord and company were concerned with art, aesthetics, urbanism, the city, architecture, and so on, but, as Lefebvre points out, as these multiple concerns fell by the wayside the Situationists were left with generally little more than an abstract critique of society and polemics (McDonough 2002: 275-76, 281…

Atopia Awaits! A Critical Sociological Analysis of Marx's Political Imaginary
Marx's (1844) estranged labor manuscript maps processes that stultify spontaneous human relations under the division of labor in the regime of capital accumulation. For Marx, negating absolutes would put 'Man' back on its natural trajectory toward positive freedom. Such evacuation of mediating 'substances' results in either frivolity or pragmatic barbarism rather than positive freedom. Marx's political imaginary rejected philosophical mysticism b…
Prices
The concept of price is defined within the social science tradition as the measure of value. This definition problematizes the relationship between price and value. A number of perspectives – “nominalist,” “realist,” and “social constructivist” – address the relationship within the context of the capitalist system of wealth production and accumulation. Also important to the social theory of price are the concepts of “inflation” and “deflation.”
Authoritarianism
Authoritarianism as a psychological type, attitude, worldview, and political constellation is examined. The core substance that connects these four analytic domains is made up of the propensity to divide the world into “us versus them” (the good, pure in‐group opposed to morally corrupt and dangerous out‐groups), fear as a primary drive, adoration of power and force, hatred of weakness, submission to leaders who are viewed as legitimate, and valo…

Social Ontology of Capitalism
This book addresses core questions about the nature and structure of contemporary capitalism and the social dynamics and countervailing forces that shape modern life. From a robust and self-consciously sociological framework, it analyzes and interrogates such issues as the nature of the social, the power of the sacred, the nature of authority, the problem of representation, reification, alienation, utopia, and collective resistance. Historical ma…

Joseph Freeman and the Frankfurt School
Much has been written about Joseph Freeman, but one aspect of his life has curiously gone unnoticed by intellectual and political historians, including his biographers. During the mid-1940s, the giant of the literary left, editor of New Masses, and cofounder of Partisan Review was a paid research and editorial assistant for the Institute of Social Research (the Frankfurt School). Though Freeman's formal involvement with the Institute lasted only …

A Faint Rattling: A Research Note on Marx’s Theory of Value
Harvey makes two notable errors: on the one hand, he misrepresents the structure of Marx’s value concept and, secondly, he misconstrues the specific, synthetic-transformative function of the exchange relation itself (note the phrase ‘passed on’ as if value may have already ‘been there’ and may even persist somehow in a post-exchange ‘afterlife’) such that value is hypostatized. Additionally, as we will see later, Harvey also misplaces the price c…
Es Kommt Die Nacht: Paul Massing, the Frankfurt School, and the Question of Labor Authoritarianism during World War II
During World War II, Paul Massing, a research assistant at the Institute of Social Research (the famous 'Frankfurt School'), helped conduct one of the most important research projects in the history of Marxist sociology. Following on the Institute's earlier work on family and authority dynamics as well as the Weimar proletariat study, the wartime American labor anti-Semitism study resulted in a massive report that was never published. This articl…
