How to Do Things with SVD
Singular value decomposition (SVD) is a mathematical technique used throughout the sciences and engineering, which decomposes data, represented in terms of matrices, to construct an “optimal base” that can contain key information. SVD serves as a conceptual framework in Singular Value Decomposition, a performance by a research collective consisting of Janet Biggs (visual artist), Agnieszka Międlar (mathematician), and Daniel Tapia Takaki (physici…

Yoshikune Igarashi. Homecomings
At the end of World War II in the Asia-Pacific theater, close to seven million Japanese, slightly over half of them servicemen, were caught overseas. Most were repatriated within the first three years of peace, but somewhere close to eight hundred thousand were captured by the Red Army and detained in Soviet labor camps until the 1950s (241 n. 1). A handful more, cut off from command communication, remained at large in the jungles of multiple Pac…
Teleology as a Theological Problem in Kant's Pre‐Critical Thought
Berlinian Pluralism and Abrahamic Monotheism
This article examines the longstanding suspicion that value-pluralism is intrinsically incompatible with monotheistic commitment, an objection that threatens to undermine the resurgence of pluralist ideas in different denominational strands of contemporary Christian political theology. Since value-pluralism is often taken to be closely wedded to the logic of political liberalism, the charge of incompatibility carries a special force. For, taken t…

The Hundred Head Contest
Japan Focus introduction: In late 1937, a Tokyo newspaper reported on a "hundred head contest" in which two Japanese imperial army officers competed to see who could lop off one hundred Chinese heads first during the campaign to take the Chinese capital city of Nanjing. The contest is symbolic of the perversion and loss of military discipline during the Japanese capture and occupation of the city that has come to be known variously as the Nanjing…
A 1942 Declaration for Greater East Asian Co-operation
The "Declaration for Greater East Asian Cooperation" was a wartime booklet and elementary text published for use in Japan's Asian and Pacific colonies and occupied territories. Through the presentation of attractive images of children and people of many lands and cultures, the images convey the noble mission that informed Japanese wartime propaganda-that Japan would unite fellow Asians under its leadership to throw off the yoke of exploitive West…
Using Regional Economic Indexes to Forecast Tax Bases
This paper evaluates the use of measures of regional economic activity to forecast tax revenues for New York State and New York City at 3-, 6-, and 12-month horizons. We construct sales- and withholding-tax base series and then apply the methodology of Stock and Watson (1989, 1991) to estimate regional indexes of coincident economic indicators. Employing an out-of-sample forecasting framework, we find that the use of the coincident indexes leads …
Oceanic Radiocarbon Between Antarctica and South Africa Along Woce Section 16 at 30°E
Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon measurements were made on 120 samples collected between Antarctica and South Africa along 30°E during the WOCE-France CIVA1 campaign in February 1993. Our principal objective was to complement the Southern Ocean's sparse existing data set in order to improve the 14 C benchmark used for validating ocean carbon-cycle models, which disagree considerably in this region. Measured 14 C is consistent with …
Nationalism in a Local Setting
The recent turbulent events in the Middle East indicate the importance and the challenges of uniting citizens in each of these countries in some commonly known story of who they are and from whence they have come. A consciously constructed sense of collective history is one especially fertile ground from which stories of national identity can be drawn. This article interprets a set of symbols displayed in a political drama in one particular Turki…
