  • The Rising Risk of a Hard Landing in China: The Two Engines of Global Growth—U.S. and China—are Stalling. Updated

    Open Access•Nouriel Roubini•ARTICLE•Japan focus•2008

For the last few years the global economy has been running on two engines, the U.S. on the consumption side and China on the production side, both lifting the entire global economy. The U.S. has been the consumer of first and last resort spending more than its income and running large current account deficits while China (and other emerging market economies) has been the producer of first and last resort, spending less than its income and running…

  • Bailouts or Bail-Ins? Responding to Financial Crises in Emerging Economies

Richard N Cooper, Nouriel Roubini et al.•ARTICLE•Foreign Affairs•2005•Cited by: 11

Roughly once a year, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, the US treasury secretary and in some cases the finance ministers of other G-7 countries will get a call from the finance minister of a large emerging market economy. The emerging market finance minister will indicate that the country is rapidly running out of foreign reserves, that it has lost access to international capital markets and, perhaps, that is has lost the …

Alberto Alesina, Nouriel Roubini et al.•BOOK•Political Cycles and the…•1997

The relationship between political and economic cycles is one of the most widely studied topics in political economics. This book examines how electoral laws, the timing of elections, the ideological orientation of governments, and the nature of competition between political parties influence unemployment, economic growth, inflation, and monetary and fiscal policy. The book presents both a thorough overview of the theoretical literature and a vas…

  • Macroeconomic Policy and Elections in Oecd Democracies

Open Access•Alberto Alesina, Gerald D Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•Economics and Politics•1992

The purpose of this paper is to test for evidence of opportunistic “political business cycles” in a large sample of 18 OECD economies. Our results can be summarized as follows: 1) We find very little evidence of pre‐electoral effects on economic outcomes, in particular, on GDP growth and unemployment; 2) We see some evidence of “political monetary cycles,” that is, expansionary monetary policy in election years; 3) We also observe indications of …

  • Political Cycles in OECD Economies

Alberto Alesina, Nouriel Roubini•ARTICLE•The Review of Economic Studies•1992

This paper studies whether the dynamic behaviour of GNP growth, unemployment and inflation is systematically affected by the timing of elections and of changes of governments. The sample include the last three decades in 18 OECD economies. We explicitly test the implication of several models of political cycles, both of the “opportunistic” and of the “partisan” type. Also, we confront the implication of recent “rational” models with more traditio…

  • Government Spending and Budget Deficits in the Industrial Countries

Open Access•Nouriel Roubini, Jeff Sachs et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Policy•1989

Fiscal policy Nouriel Roubini and Jeffrey Sachs This paper examines the evolution of the size of government and of budget deficits in OECD economies. We highlight the rapid increase in government spending in the 1970s, the sharp rise in budget deficits and public debt after 1973, and the reversal in these trends in the 1980s. The increase in the size of government was associated in part with the slowdown in growth after 1973, but also reflected g…
