This article analyzes the use of several response particles in face-to-face interaction in Wa'ikhana, an East Tukano language of northwestern Amazonia. Carl Strehlow's comparative dictionary manuscript is a unique item of Australian cultural heritage; it is a large collection of circa 7,600 Aranda, 6,800 Loritja (Luritja) and 1,200 Dieri to German entries compiled at the beginning of the twentieth century at the Hermannsburg Mission in central Australia. Place reference is pervasive in talk-in-interaction but remains less well understood than reference to persons. This paper explores place reference in Kula, an endangered non-Austronesian language of the Timor-Alor-Pantar family in southeastern Indonesia. The pattern of council house sales in one housing authority, the City of Aberdeen, was monitored over a two year period since the 'Right to Buy' legislation came into force. The pattern of sales was variable, both spatially and between house types. Semi-detached and terraced properties sold at a greater rate than flatted properties, and estates with higher socio-economic status and a higher popularity rating experienced a greater level of sales. …
