Parental agency and social resilience in families during unexpected societal-level shocks
In this article, we examine strategies used by Finnish parents during the first wave of the COVID-19 lockdown by analysing qualitative data: the parents’ writings (n=93). In Nordic welfare societies, social institutions act as safety nets for families. However, this role was affected by the unexpected societal-level shock of the pandemic. We approach coping strategies from the theoretical perspective of social resilience combined with relational …
Determinants of long-term unemployment in early adulthood
Cumulative contributions of social and health-related determinants to long-term unemployment during early working life among young adults are poorly understood. Therefore, we used four cumulative indices of both parental and own social and health-related determinants of such unemployment among a cohort which comprised a complete census of children born in Finland in 1987. The cohort participants were registered in the Medical Birth Register, and …
Childhood determinants for early psychiatric disability pension
Background: Mental disorders can affect work ability and lead to early exit from the labour market through disability pension. Aims: This study aimed to identify childhood determinants of psychiatric disability pension in early adulthood. Methods: The 1987 Finnish Birth Cohort includes a complete census of children born in a single year. The children were followed up from birth until 31 December 2012 using official registers maintained by the Fin…
Long-Term Educational Outcomes of Child Care Arrangements in Finland
This study asks how Finnish 6-year-olds who stay at home before school start compare in educational outcomes with children who attend public day care. Earlier studies have shown that participation in public day care can enhance school performance especially among disadvantaged children. In Finland, the child home care allowance scheme supports the home care of 6-year-olds if they have a younger sibling under the age of 3 who is also not attending…
Antidepressant use and violent crimes among young people
BACKGROUND: The use of antidepressants, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), has been questioned due to poor efficacy and safety. We examined whether young violent offenders were more likely antidepressant users prior to their first violent offence than other young persons. METHODS: The study is a follow-up of children born in Finland in 1987 (n=59 120), linking national registers to each other using personal identity codes…
Social Mobility and Crime
This research examined intergenerational educational mobility as an antecedent of criminal offending. Anomie theory and the general theory of crime assume an inverse association between intergenerational mobility and criminal behaviour. In addition, Moffitt’s taxonomic theory and general strain theory expect intergenerational continuity in low educational attainment to be especially criminogenic. We examined the hypothesized associations with tot…
Social determinants of mental health
BACKGROUND: Most mental disorders start in childhood and adolescence. Risk factors are prenatal and perinatal, genetic as well as environmental and family related. Research evidence is, however, insufficient to explain the life-course development of mental disorders. This study aims to provide evidence on factors affecting mental health in childhood and adolescence. DATA AND METHODS: The 1987 Finnish Birth Cohort covers all children born in Finla…
