  • Class Solidarity or Representation Gaps? Union Attitudes Among Formal and Informal Workers in Argentina and Chile

    Open Access•Pablo Pérez-Ahumada, Rodolfo Elbert•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2026

This article examines whether formal and informal workers in Argentina and Chile hold different attitudes toward labor unions. Engaging debates on labor-market dualism and union revitalization, we assess the representation gap hypothesis—which expects weaker union support among outsiders—against the class solidarity hypothesis, which anticipates broadly similar orientations across labor-market positions. Using original 2025 survey data from both …

Rodolfo Elbert, Sofía Negri•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor and Society•2021•Cited by: 3

The Covid-19 pandemic took the world by surprise in early 2020. By March 2020 many countries had taken drastic measures to contain the virus. In this article, we analyze the work and organizing experiences of these workers from 20 March to 1 July of 2020. First, we look at the conseque…

  • Informality, Class Structure, and Class Identity in Contemporary Argentina

    Open Access•Rodolfo Elbert•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 9

The dynamics of peripheral capitalism in Latin America includes the employment or self-employment of a significant proportion of the working class under informal arrangements. The neoliberal transformations of the 1990s deepened this feature of Latin American labor markets, and it was not reversed during the period of economic growth that followed the collapse of neoliberalism. In this context, sociological debates have focused on the relationshi…

  • The identity of class in Latin America

    Open Access•Rodolfo Elbert, Pablo Pérez-Ahumada et al.•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2018•Cited by: 10•References: 34

Class identity is a key mechanism in the explanation of class-based collective action. For decades, this was particularly relevant in Latin America, where objective class inequality was persistent and there was a long history of collective action, originating in the workplace and expressed through unions and labor parties. Despite persistent inequalities in the region, since the 1990s scholars increasingly claimed that the relation between object…

  • Union Organizing after the Collapse of Neoliberalism in Argentina

    Open Access•Rodolfo Elbert•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 18

Recent Argentine history showed that since 2003 the labor movement became increasingly relevant due to protests organized by unionized formal workers. Labor revitalization in a context of persistent informality raised the following question: Were there union organizing strategies that related formal workers to the broader working class community that included informal workers? This article answered the question through the analysis of union strat…
