Close Race: Harnessing Multiracialism to Reduce Racial Prejudice
How Police Behavior Shapes Perceptions of Protests: Evidence from Black Lives Matter
As Black Lives Matter protests swept across the United States in recent years, protesters encountered a mix of police reactions: Some news reports described police in military gear and widespread arrests, whereas others reported minimal police involvement. We developed an original dataset of BLM protests that shows that police reactions varied widely, even when comparing protests with similar messages and tactics. We then investigated this variat…
The “content” of intergroup contact: Lessons from the Denton Women’s Interracial Fellowship
Does the content of intergroup contact matter?Despite extensive research on the benefits of contact for intergroup relations, we know little about what happens during contact-based programs and interventions. This article addresses this gap by inductively building theory about the desired content of contact. My analysis draws on oral history interviews and archival data from the Denton Women's Interracial Fellowship: a real-world case of intergroup…
The Politics of Sight: Revisiting Timothy Pachirat'sEvery Twelve Seconds
In his ethnography of industrialized slaughter,Every Twelve Seconds, Timothy Pachirat coins a label to describe political interventions that use visibility as a catalyst for reform-the "politics of sight." We argue that the politics of sight rests on three premises that are all mistaken or misspecified: (1) that exposing morally repugnant practices will make us see them, (2) that seeing such practices will stop us from acquiescing to them, and (3…
An examination of differences in variables maintaining smoking behavior in adult smokers with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) smoke cigarettes at higher rates and have greater difficulty quitting than their non-diagnosed peers. This study examined differences between smokers with and without ADHD on a range of smoking-related variables. Twenty-two subjects with ADHD and 22 controls completed self-report measures of withdrawal symptoms, smoking motivation, sensory experience of smoking, and positive and neg…
A Mental Health Program for the Peace Corps
The goals of the mental health program which have developed within the Peace Corps program may be viewed both in general and in highly specific terms. These two perspectives are closely interrelated and interdependent. As seen from the one perspective, the mental health program seeks for the individual the very values which the Peace Corps itself offers him: an opportunity for intellectual and emotional growth; for discovery of his own capacities…
