    Open Access•Ulrike Schuerkens•OTHER•The Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopedia…•2012•References: 1

The word colonization is derived from the Latin word colonus (inhabitant), which means the settlement of people and the establishment of settler colonies. It is a political phenomenon. The colonial state keeps the subordinated society and its population in a legally inferior position. But colonization has also been linked to important social, cultural, and economic influences of European or Western powers over Asia, Latin America, and Africa

In this article, the author tackles the combined effects of transnational migrations and social transformations. During the last few years, it has become more and more obvious that globalization characterizes more and more transnational migrations. New forms of interdependence, transnational societies, and regional cooperation transform the lives of millions of people, who are linking the future of states and societies. In the countries of the So…

  • Global Forces and Local Life-Worlds: Social Transformations

Ulrike Schuerkens•BOOK•Global Forces and Local Life-Worlds•2004

  • Structural Change in Western Africa as a Legacy of European Colonialism: The Labour System in Ghana and the Ivory Coast

    Open Access•Ulrike Schuerkens•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2003•References: 9

In this article, the author analyses the transformation of the labour system in the Ivory Coast and in Ghana. The empirical research was undertaken during two field trips in urban centres (Abidjan and Accra). The transformation of the labour system is shown on a macro- and a micro-level: the structural change of the economy on the one hand, and life-stories of men in their fifties and sixties on the other. This comparative research project shows …

  • The Sociological and Anthropological Study of Globalization and Localization

    Open Access•Ulrike Schuerkens•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2003•Cited by: 7•References: 18

This article sketches the development of the topic of globalization and localization within sociology and anthropology during the last 20 years and summarizes research findings. Subsequently, a number of topics for further enquiry are outlined. It is argued that the mapping of global cultural flows is still at an impressionistic stage and will be supplemented by systematic procedures. This will lead - as the contributors to this publication show …
