An analytical approach to the glazed architectural decoration in Iran from the 12th to the 14th century
Eleven Islamic Tombstones from Egypt
This article introduces eleven hitherto unknown Islamic tombstones from a private collection in Germany with an edition and translation of their inscriptional content. From a close analysis of their formulae, selection of Qurʾānic quotations, epigraphic style, fabric of the stelae, and marginal ornament, the stelae are attributed to Egypt during a period c. 180–270/c. 795–885. Unveiling the craftsmanship and knowledge behind Iranian stuccoes (11th–14th centuries)
Gypsum-based stucco decorations of 47 monuments in Iran, from the Seljuq to the Ilkhanid period (11th-14th centuries), were studied by multimodal analytical methods, including X-Ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscope and image analysis to comprehend their composition and technical characteristics. Construction of the Khoja Zaynuddin Mosque
As part of an ongoing project at the World Heritage Site of Bukhara, we investigated the glue used in the construction of the Khoja Zaynuddin mosque. Analysis by a range of techniques confirmed that it consisted of a collagen-based glue. However, the glue contained many non-protein constituents. The presence of lipid material suggests that the glue was produced by a relatively unsophisticated process. More surprisingly, various marker compounds o…
